SPEAKERS

Nestor Aparicio, John Martin

Nestor Aparicio  00:01

Welcome home. We are W, N, S T am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We call this thing Baltimore positive. We are taking the show back out on the road all week long. We’re going to be at Planet Fitness and Timonium on Thursday. I will have the new scratch offs in the Maryland. Lot of these are the Maryland treasures. These have been fun. I’m going to get into that with John Martin momentarily. Also our friends at GBMC finally got my shirt together here for the walk a mile in their shoes. It was last month. I’m going to be recapping that with Danny umbergolio, who joined me over pizza at the pizza John’s last year. We’re going to be next week, doing crab cakes and the crab derby. It’s preak this week. Next week, we’ll be down at Lexington market on Wednesday. Ivan Bates is going to join us. I’ve got some great guests coming by next Wednesday at fayley’s. That’s the 13th, 21st we move over to Catonsville, where I have my own table in the front. They did it all fancy for me at the fishmonger’s daughter, that is the faidley’s family moving out to Catonsville, not moving, but expanding with just a beautiful, beautiful space. We’re looking forward to getting back out there on the 21st all brought to you by Farnan and Dermer. They are the comfort guys keeping us comfortable as we get through sports season. I know a guy’s not comfortable, and I tell you what, there have been so many Grand Slams that I haven’t even been like bothering you, because sometimes I’ll text you and say, Ah, five grand. Get it together, Martin, get back into the vault there and pull the five grand out for Jim. Kathy Susie, whoever’s winning tonight, because they’re they haven’t won a lot of games, John Martin, but they’ve been costing you money lately by hitting some home runs. So kudos for home run riches. At least we got something going there

John Martin  01:41

we have, spring is in the air, and the home runs are flying out at a pretty good pace. Here, remind me to change my number. I’m making a little note so that you don’t have to text me. You don’t

Nestor Aparicio  01:53

8

have another phone, like a burner phone. I thought I you know, I didn’t

John Martin  01:56

know, you know. So you know, let’s go right there. Let’s go right to it. Because, you know, when we last left our heroes, I think last time we we chatted, we were anticipating our truest club VIP experience for April 29 and as you may recall, that game was rained out. I

Nestor Aparicio  02:13

know all about this because I wound up at the games the next day when they did the two double headers, my wife and I went down and sunned ourselves at a beautiful day. So yes, it

John Martin  02:22

was a beautiful day for Michelle Crisco, who happened to be our contestant of the game for that regularly scheduled 1230 affair. And Michelle Crisco was the beneficiary, if not one, but two grand slams. I’m going to go on a limb here. My staff will fact check me later. Michelle won a total of $10,500 I believe that puts her in the number one spot all time of home run Rich’s cash winners, and we will check that no one’s

8

Nestor Aparicio  02:51

Listen, there was a Grand Slam before your time. Everybody my age remembers this. Gary renicky was my favorite Oriole at the time. He hit a $1 million grand slam, or it was a home run on demand. This was 40 some odd. Mean, this is in the early 80s. So I do know that there were there one point when a million dollars was a million dollars. That was some

John Martin  03:15

serious cash.

Nestor Aparicio  03:17

I saw a millionaire’s row at Kentucky Derby. And I’m like, they call it something else. Now I don’t know, like, you know, but, but I know you guys have given away some big bucks in the past for these things, but the Grand Slam thing is so random, and the bases do get loaded from time to time. And every time it happens, I think of you, and I think of the Maryland lottery, and I think some lucky person out there is screaming at their television like I was at Cooper’s north the other night. Gets

John Martin  03:44

8

better.

Nestor Aparicio  03:45

I scream at their defense. I don’t screw the Grand Slams are nice, but if I was winning 5g I’m in.

John Martin  03:50

Yep, yep. So the story gets better, because normally when people are contesting the game, they’re home. We Yeah, Doug. Doug tells them they know they’re watching the game. There’s some of the game. They’re doing their normal routine. Michelle actually went ahead and bought a ticket to the game. Michelle was in the stands doing her own VIP experience while, while they launched two grand slams. And you know where Michelle is from, where in the world? Get your get your Rand McNally. Michelle is from pilesville, Maryland. Nestor, where is pile I’m

Nestor Aparicio  04:23

not kidding. Don’t make me guess, because I could Google Map it right now, but I do know it exists, and I’ve seen it on a map, so that’s not the first time I’ve heard of it. But go ahead, where is pilesville? Do you want

8

John Martin  04:33

to tell me Maryland? Michelle and 932 of her friends live in pilesville, which is just shy of the Pennsylvania border, north of street Maryland, which I thought Street was almost the more northern part of the state. It is not pilot kind of blanketed between 83 to the west and the Susquehanna River to the east.

Nestor Aparicio  04:55

So is it in Hartford County or Baltimore County?

John Martin  04:57

Northern Harford County,

Nestor Aparicio  04:58

8

all right? So, okay. So it’s on the Harford County side, okay? So I know exactly. They have Eagles up there Baltic, and now they have someone who’s had a pretty good experience. So she went to the lunchtime game because we had the sweet thing that was Tuesday that got rained, right? So

John Martin  05:15

to a later date, yep, okay,

Nestor Aparicio  05:16

to a later date. So it wasn’t like Wednesday, because I was wondering what happened to that person? So that person still hasn’t had their truest experience where they get to eat, eat, eat, and then maybe get a Grand Slam. Okay, so she was at the game. Did she stay for the second game? I need to ask her now. I need to find out, because my wife and I walked in between the two games. We went to the

Nestor Aparicio  05:35

same

8

John Martin  05:36

I’m going to guess not, because she was the contestant of The first one, and having won over $10,000 I hope she just, kind of, you know, said I’m out.

Nestor Aparicio  05:44

Does she have videos of herself screaming and yelling? I

John Martin  05:47

don’t think she’s come in yet to to get the ceremonial check. So

Nestor Aparicio  05:50

8

I want to meet. Okay, all right. I like, great. She’s my neighbor right to the north here, right? Literally, okay. But again,

John Martin  05:55

springtime, and we alluded to it. We think of, we think of Preakness here in Maryland. We think of race tracks our annual $6 for $5 promotion. Fans love that. It starts really with Triple Crown weekend. So it’s already begun now through June 21 you purchase any $6 worth of race tracks tickets for $5 so actually you get a free $1 promotion. Little kick back there.

Nestor Aparicio  06:24

Well, it’s a racing week here, so you know.

John Martin  06:27

And what a race

8

Nestor Aparicio  06:28

you know I’m going to have, you know, my guests that I always have from NBC, Randy Moss will be on. Donna brothers will be on next week, although she’s closing out her time in Louisville. John, it happens every year. I’m going to admit this, because I haven’t talked to anybody Raskin and I might talk about it, but he was out of the country. So I got to give you this. My wife and I, we did our work at our planet fitness thing. We came home and we were, like, going to go to Costas, we were going to go to the OTB. We were going to, like, experience it. And I said to my wife, it’s me a lot of people there. You know what I mean? Like, if we need to be into that, we need to towel off, because we had just worked out. And I’m like, No, we’re just going to sit here and eat soup and I’m going to watch the NBC broadcast, because they do such an amazing job. And in the hour and a half leading up, you learn about all the horses, the connection so happy. The trainer lost his wife eight weeks ago, and his horse qualified. And then there’s this female trainer from Kentucky who, you know, who went on when Donna brothers had her on on the track on the way in, all she could talk about is how great Donna was. And Donna said, we’re not here to talk about me and and then Donna said, I’m going to pick her horse, because I want a female to win. I want a female trainer to win. And she was the only one on the broadcast scene that picked a horse, and that horse was so far back that I said to my wife, I’m like, wow, one horse is way back there. And then all of a sudden, when I watched the replay, it was that horse, and that drone showing that horse’s trip from the back to the front, one of the most amazing things and the scene. And I’ll tell you just the emotion of it and the emotion of horse racing. There’s nothing like it. And I’ll tell you what happened. The jockey got interviewed by Donna on the backside, and I got it got dusty in the room for me on a Saturday night. And that happens. I don’t know why I get emotional about the roses and the Derby, and it ties me to the Preakness but it’s Preakness week here, and I just laid it all out on the line for you as to why people need to love it.

John Martin  08:30

Yep, yep. Well, first off, you’re a softy. Everybody knows that for all the bravado you’re well,

Nestor Aparicio  08:35

my wife gets into all of these stories before the get the races and and it sucks me in sports,

John Martin  08:42

8

yeah. And I didn’t see any of that. My experience was later that night when I saw, Oh, wow, that’s a long shot one, of course, I’m doing the the calculation, wow, that’s, that’s pretty cool. And then I saw, and I don’t know if you’ve seen this one, the drone coverage, yes, absolutely amazing. Did you see the the camera on her? I miss. I keep calling her because I’m sorry. Don’t know

Nestor Aparicio  09:02

her name.

John Martin  09:03

Trainer Yes.

Nestor Aparicio  09:04

Trainer DeVoe, yes.

8

John Martin  09:06

They were focused on her and they were showing the race. It’s cool thing they do not where they’re showing you two cameras, and

Nestor Aparicio  09:12

she’s on the rail like

Nestor Aparicio  09:14

pounding

John Martin  09:15

8

it. Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. What great theater. I mean, it was fantastic

Nestor Aparicio  09:19

well, and you know, this is what happens when I give scratch offs away from the Maryland when I’m out. And honestly, it happens at Costas, because it is a horse racing environment. You promoted race tracks. And I want to get to the NASCAR part of this too, because that’s something I’ve only done once in my life, and it was too loud for me. But the horse racing thing, I keep thinking about Charlie Eckman and going out to Pimlico and Bowie and Laura when I was a young person at the paper back in the day, and the that two minutes, or that minute and 45 seconds, whatever it is for the race, where everybody’s focused on something in their rooting, and they have it in and and it’s just there aren’t a lot of things that make that sound. I go to concerts, we cheer, we sing. Sing, we dance, we do all those things, but horse racing, because now home run will get you off your feet, a good shot in the basketball game, a goal in hockey or whatever, this time of the year, and all of that. But the NASCAR thing, and I’m going to give you some oxygen to talk about a newer promotion, because it’s not my lane. Literally, although I’ve covered it, I’ve talked about it even when I was nationally syndicated, when we had tragedies with had tragedies with Dale Earnhardt and all that. But the NASCAR thing so loud unto itself. It’s a different sound to me that when I was at Dover, it doesn’t sound like that on television, like when you’re at the race, when you’re at the race, it is for anybody that’s never been it is really you always see him wearing the headsets. It’s an unbelievable sound fury to be at a NASCAR race.

John Martin  10:46

Well, it’s also, I mean, it’s, yeah, they’ve got the headsets on this I’m wearing now, not NASCAR sanctioned, necessarily.

Nestor Aparicio  10:52

They don’t look as good

8

John Martin  10:53

as you do or me. Well, yeah, but it’s not, not what you hear. You feel. I mean, your whole body. There’s a rumble. Yes, yeah, sense of that, and we are proud. This is, I believe, our third consecutive year working with with NASCAR and our friends at Powerball to come up with our annual revised player promotion. This year, NASCAR changed a little bit of how they do their their awarding of their their annual Driver of the Year type Cup Series championship. So they’re doing a little differently. So we are too. But if you go to MD lottery.com you got all the details on the NASCAR Powerball, the chase is, what they call it, is, is, is live and well, and you buckle

Nestor Aparicio  11:36

up for cash and prizes now through June 15, is that pretty good?

John Martin  11:40

Yeah, that. Well, I

Nestor Aparicio  11:41

8

just want to that sure that was more like the the hottest show on wheels. Different, different promotion. That was a different radio I don’t know how to do the NASCAR promotions because they’re on Fox and I, I just don’t I like the NASCAR thing. I used to like maybe watch sports center on a Monday morning and I’d see and be up on it. I’m just not up on it. But I know the NASCAR Powerball Chase is here because I’m reading it from empty lottery.com

John Martin  12:06

So, so what players do is they any Powerball ticket they purchase between now and June 15, they are eligible to enter into their my lottery rewards account, and beginning in in the middle of May, for five consecutive weeks, more or less, we will draw eight lucky winners, total of 40. Each of those winners will win $2,500 and then one of those 40 will be selected to be our Maryland representative. Nationwide, there are multiple states across the country to participate, and they will be one finalist goes into the the hopper, if you will with all the other lotteries that choose to participate. And then it’ll be a series of, you know, we’re all in playoff mode now with hockey and basketball at Final Four, type of of evolution. So there’ll be a series of drawings where people who are eliminated from those drawings win cash, but you continue on. So ultimately, the one person left standing at the NASCAR Cup Series championship in Homestead, near Miami, will win $1 million at the end of the year.

Nestor Aparicio  13:09

I mean, you’re an old baseball guy, so homestead, you know, you remember the homestead home? Yes, absolutely. So, I mean, this is a trip where you win blue water in a NASCAR race. I like that. I like that even better than like, Vegas, or, you know, some other place. But when we had the cars, the IRL cars, that went through the harbor, 15 years ago, I lived in this environment, everything shook. NASCAR man, it’s like it’s got different, like power. And the thing I remember is how beautiful the cars were, just how, like, colorful they were, and how fast they moved. There’s something about speed. This time of the year, hockey season, we got it all going on, John, I want to talk about Miss Pac Man because the ads changed here this week at W NST, and I saw we had the Miss Pac Man thing going on here. And that’s the kind of speed where I had the joystick when I was a kid, chasing the cherries and the bananas and the peaches around and all that stuff I am. And I said this to a couple of weeks ago, I’m of that generation, you know, I I’m the guy that played a lot of Donkey Kong and a lot of Miss Pac Man. So I am partial. I like Miss pac man better than Pac Man.

John Martin  14:16

Well, yeah, that’s okay. I mean, you, you are of a certain generation that does remember those games finally and and then you might be intrigued too, that when in our second chance Contest, which we have for The Miz Pac Man game, you could win one of two Miz Pac Man arcade games.

8

Nestor Aparicio  14:31

No, I can’t do that. Nothing would get done if I, if I had that game here, nothing would get done.

John Martin  14:36

Yeah, yeah. Well, then, then, then you can politely, we

Nestor Aparicio  14:40

need to take all my toys away. It’s springtime. I got to get work done, right? Yeah,

John Martin  14:44

8

but it’s a lot of fun. Go to the MD lottery.com. Click on The Miz Pac Man promotion. Our man, Mike, will explain the how the game is played, how the promotion is played, but you could be one of two people left standing, and we will have that promotion running through this. The spring. We’ll start on April 17. We started on April 17, where people enter into that promotion, and you can check out the drawing times and potentially win cash prizes above and beyond the scratch off ticket, but also be eligible for one of two Ms Pac Man games.

Nestor Aparicio  15:19

Can I get some miss pack. I mean, I have the Maryland treasures, and these have been the most fun ever, because people can pick what they want, but this Miss pack, man, I want to stick on this for a minute here, because I just learned something. You and I, we talked about what the official word of the silvery material that you scratch when you scratch it off, and like I saw people scratching the peach John’s last week. We call it schmutz. That’s probably not the real word for it, but there’s probably a name for what it really is. With Pac Man and I did this promotion last year, and we did the regular Pac Man. It was like, walk, walk, walk, walk, like the sound it makes. And Miss Pac Man makes a little bit more of a like, a bling bling, bling bling, like, a little bit more of like that kind of sound. Perfect. I yeah, I didn’t know what that’s called, and it’s right here at MD lottery. It’s chomping. They chomp like chomping at the bit. So that’s the official word for what the Pac Man does, the little thing. And here’s the cool part about this, scratch off, because people scratch these off, John and I listen. I’m not in the department that makes these you’re never going to let me do that. I’ve offered to sit in the meetings and be a consultant constantly to the Maryland lottery, so I don’t get to do I didn’t get what. Didn’t even get on the art although, although everybody loves this boardwalk when I think was that summer’s 80 degree days this week, and make me feel that way, but I didn’t get in on it. But I this Miss Pac Man thing, it’s easy. You play it the same way you play. Miss Pac Man, it plays the card play, Hey, man, I gotta explain how to play the game sometimes to people, and they’re all wired a little differently when you actually play the game, or just do what I do, which is the cash prize, and then and you get the

Nestor Aparicio  17:00

empty

Nestor Aparicio  17:00

lottery app, which is the easiest way to let people know whether they won or lost. But Miss Pac Man, I’m going to want to play the game and chase the peaches Absolutely,

8

John Martin  17:08

absolutely. You want to chomp your way through the through the game. That’s, that’s part of the experience. That’s, that’s why we do what we do. Who

Nestor Aparicio  17:14

makes up the games that make up the games that let me know whether I win or lose, and the games that I have to explain to people I want to know.

John Martin  17:21

Well, it’s not me.

Nestor Aparicio  17:23

8

Not me either. Okay,

John Martin  17:24

yeah. Well,

Nestor Aparicio  17:26

we know.

John Martin  17:26

And you know what? You know why people play Nestor, they play to win. Do they not? They

8

Nestor Aparicio  17:31

absolutely do.

John Martin  17:32

And we have winter stories at MD lottery.com one of my favorite there’s a couple here that I’ll just kind of tease you with. We had a dad in gaithersburg who stopped by the Maryland lottery and claimed a $50,000 top prize back on May 4, or, I’m sorry, back on April 20, he was back in on May 4, two weeks later with a another what dollar win? Yes. Yes. Carlos, Lucky guy that he is. I’m

Nestor Aparicio  18:01

looking at

Nestor Aparicio  18:02

8

Carlos here,

John Martin  18:03

but a different game. So two different games, two different retailers. I’m

Nestor Aparicio  18:06

going to put Carlos in the front of Baltimore positive this week. He’s going to be that’s gonna be my featured picture right now, 50 G right here. I’m Carlos got a hat on. He didn’t want anybody to know because

John Martin  18:17

he’s

8

Nestor Aparicio  18:17

you win twice.

John Martin  18:18

He keeps showing up here. People are going to know

Nestor Aparicio  18:20

him seriously. How often do people win twice? How often

John Martin  18:24

8

do you Oh, people win twice? Big time like that, fairly often. But within two weeks, that’s that’s kind of unique,

Nestor Aparicio  18:33

okay? That was okay,

John Martin  18:35

yeah. And, and the fact that he had different retail and people focus on a lucky game because it’s good to them, or a lucky retailer, Carlos spreads his his luck around. Carlos

Nestor Aparicio  18:47

is having a lucky month. Alright? Good Carlos,

8

John Martin  18:50

he’s having, yeah, he’s having a darn good month. So we do have other other winter stories as well. One of my favorites, you know, we talked about Hagerstown and that aura around Hagerstown last week with people winning. Struck yet again. A man from Columbia happened to be traveling on the road and was in Hagerstown, stopped at market lot liquors, bought a $50,000 bonus Match five ticket, bam. You know how this ends. Wins $50,000 so while he is from Columbia, the lucky retailer was in Hagerstown, continuing that lucky spell with Columbia,

Nestor Aparicio  19:27

Maryland, like Merryweather post, not Medellin, right?

John Martin  19:31

Yeah.

Nestor Aparicio  19:31

8

Okay, just checking it. Okay. All right,

John Martin  19:33

yes, yes, yes. We get a lot of these stories. What’s going

Nestor Aparicio  19:35

on with Hagerstown? Why is Hagerstown so? Like,

John Martin  19:38

I don’t know. I don’t know. You know they probably, they’re just lucky. I

8

Nestor Aparicio  19:43

did a whole stick on Hagerstown last week because Ethan gives us he’s from Hagerstown, and then John Allen, my buddy, his band’s playing in Hagerstown. So we did like a whole loving for Hagerstown here last week. So you know, the Maryland crab cake tour is taking me lots of places, and. Baker stands been one of my favorites since Frederick too. I’ve discovered great things about all parts of the state, which allows me to give these Maryland treasures scratch offs away in good conscience. It is horse racing week around here. We’re encouraging everybody I’ll play responsibly. These are the acid tea courses. When you come to see me at fayley’s Next week or at the fishmonger’s daughter on the 21st I will, I will give you the choice of four tickets. This has been really fun, John, because people really looked at them, and they’re like, ah, and they’re like, which one’s lucky? And they’re examining the numbers. And I feel lucky about this one. Everybody’s got a lucky number or lucky thing, and when they get offered a ticket by me on the Maryland crab cake tour, it becomes fun to meet people this way. So sometimes, sometime I’ll meet somebody from pilesville or Hagerstown. Maybe sports all over with

John Martin  20:46

it could be, it could be, I would think just the opportunity to meet you people are lucky. Oh,

Nestor Aparicio  20:51

geez, with all of that, He is the executive director of all things Maryland lottery and gaming, buttering me up so that he doesn’t have to pay more grand slams this week. Tell you what, John this baseball season, things got to get a little better with the Yankees coming to town. We got Yankees in town this week, right? We have Preakness this week. We got Stanley Cup and NBA. We got a lot of things going on, anything that I left out here, other than telling, you know, just slow their roll and be cool on all of this stuff.

Nestor Aparicio  21:37

I have heard you promote that event, and I’ve thought about that event, and now I’m thinking more about that event. And so thank you. Anything gets me down to me meather down to Columbia, I dig, so I gotta get Calvin Ball on the program too. John Martin is here. He’s here each and every week, doing the responsible thing and filling us in and trying to keep a sense of humor about Miss Pac Man promotions and all the fun stuff we’re doing. And, you know, big winners coming in. Have we gotten all the spinners out? Are we done with of all?

John Martin  22:05

No, no, we’ve only had two spinners, so there are more there.

Nestor Aparicio  22:09

John Martin  22:11

didn’t talk about it. No, no, we have, we have that, you know, that we can only open the door when they come knocking, and no one’s come knocking. So we’ll see what happens.

Nestor Aparicio  22:19

All right, if you’re a big spinner, go get the big spin too, because that’s the fun game where you get to come in and spin the big wheel. You can learn more about all of these games at MD lottery. Come and see me. I’ll tell you about it as well. We’ll be at Planet Fitness this Thursday in Timonium. We’re going to be failings on the 13th, and then on the 21st we move to Catonsville and the fishmonger’s daughter. And I’m putting together a very aggressive schedule in June for the Maryland crab cake tour, because we’re having so much fun out on the road. And besides that, I got to give some Maryland treasures. Tickets away. We are W NST am 1570 TAS Baltimore, and we never stop talking Baltimore positive.
