Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Nestor Aparicio

Nestor Aparicio  00:00

Welcome back. WNSG, Towson, Baltimore and wn St. dotnet. We are live Super Bowl 51. We, weโ€™ve had football players, weโ€™ve had rock stars, weโ€™ve had ravens, no actors. And you know, my wife and I have like a little game we play. I donโ€™t see a lot of movies. I see one movie every three or four years saw a lot of movies when I was a kid just donโ€™t see as many. And the joke we always make is somebody will say, hey, nurse, did you see the new movie? And Iโ€™ll say no, and my wife will say he hasnโ€™t seen Top Gun yet.

Monica Barbaro  00:34

Youโ€™ve never seen top guns. Still not seen it?

Nestor Aparicio  00:38

I have not seen Tom No. No, I knew they should he watch

Monica Barbaro  00:44

it though. Right here.

Glen Powell  00:45

Heโ€™s gonna watch it with you.

Nestor Aparicio  00:48

Hereโ€™s the other one. The other one is if she wants to go to second place shows like sheโ€™ll be like, heโ€™s never even seen Footloose. Show. Miles Teller that one. Yeah. The remake of Footloose. Admit that the Kevin Bacon once was didnโ€™t go well.

Glen Powell  01:02

What was Kevin Kevin really sensitive about people that was singing music

Nestor Aparicio  01:07

with his brother, you know, brothers, they do that thing. Glen Powell was here Monica Barbara here and top Tom Cruiseโ€™s not here, but thatโ€™s okay. I mean, you guys are here. When you think

Glen Powell  01:20

first I wish I was Tom Cruise.

Nestor Aparicio  01:22

They wouldnโ€™t. They actually wouldnโ€™t let Tom Cruise come along. Right. So hereโ€™s what weโ€™re gonna do to be fair, Lucasian Top Gun, Iโ€™m gonna let him conduct the interview.

Glen Powell  01:31

Can I just tell you this is gonna be probably one of the only times on the whole tour that weโ€™re gonna hasnโ€™t seen it. Iโ€™m like, wait, I have to break this movie down for you. I feel like I have to explain all

Nestor Aparicio  01:42

the worst thing and this is true when I was when I was young, because Iโ€™m 51 I was actually there when they were shooting Top Gun in San Diego at the amusement park. I remember them shooting it that day. Still never never saw it. Never saw it. I mean, I know kind of, do you know what an aeroplane is? I flew in one day.

Glen Powell  01:59

Okay, okay, so thatโ€™s a good start.

Monica Barbaro  02:01

On an every three to four years. What is it going to take for us to get you to see this movie? You guys

Nestor Aparicio  02:07

been super cool on the set? Weโ€™re already halfway there. Whatโ€™s the movie ticket cost?

Glen Powell  02:13

So thereโ€™s what we pay for your ticket? If you go see this movie, I promise you I will pay Iโ€™m already halfway there. What we

Monica Barbaro  02:19

went through to do this movie was one of the most rigorous training regimens that I think maybe anyone ever has done for a movie other than Tom Cruise for his other movies. He designed this insane aviation experience we got we got classroom time but we got 40 hours of screen time in though in the air. We did some actual FAA teams

Glen Powell  02:44

we shot in real early so youโ€™re in we are in an FAA T in the entire movie. Weโ€™re doing real dogfighting all this stuff is practical. Yeah, Iโ€™m gonna just pitch you right now. If you are going to see one movie for the next decade, I love this. It is this movie it has romance and as adventure itโ€™s itโ€™s fun. And these arrows sequences and youโ€™ve never seen anything like it. Iโ€™m telling you again. I bet my money on it. I donโ€™t care what a ticket cost where you from? Baltimore, Maryland Baltimore, I will I will you tell me what the economy will fund I will refund the hell out of that ticket if you donโ€™t like this man. Yeah,

Nestor Aparicio  03:17

so my wife and I are at a are at a charity event about seven, eight years ago. And we got a lot of these things and Iโ€™m on stage with a football player and theyโ€™re gonna do a silent auction. And one of the auction items is the Top Gun experience. So you literally from any port in America that they fly, you go up and you you know you drop you go Yeah. Amusement Park at Hershey. She threw up like six months ago. Hey, I donโ€™t so Iโ€™m thinking like whatever this is, this is a serious like training regimen right for flying. That. Can you toss your cookies maybe a little bit? Go kind of fast.

Monica Barbaro  03:53

Some people did. Yes. Some people you do. You do. So many cook. Youโ€™ll

Glen Powell  03:59

see youโ€™ll see there is a beach scene in the movie, which you wouldnโ€™t know because you want to go to the movie, but youโ€™re gonna see this movie. Youโ€™re gonna see this movie. This is a promise, but Iโ€™ll just say my wife.

Nestor Aparicio  04:09

Sheโ€™s right there. Hey.

Monica Barbaro  04:11

If we find out in the future that you did, yeah,

Glen Powell  04:15

Iโ€™m gonna call Kevin Bacon to make sure you go. Gang. Whatโ€™s your wifeโ€™s name?

Nestor Aparicio  04:19

Jennifer.

Glen Powell  04:20

Jennifer. Jennifer.

Nestor Aparicio  04:22

Iโ€™m in deep. If he doesnโ€™t go see this movie. Honey. I think we needed a double feature. We need to do Footloose and stop going to get that out

Monica Barbaro  04:32

to watch the first one. Yeah.

Nestor Aparicio  04:36

It would be bad to come to your movie without seeing them no no you

Monica Barbaro  04:40

should alone if you can only handle one movie this decade. Yeah, the RS however your eye itโ€™s gonna make you want to watch the first one and itโ€™s just I mean itโ€™s first

Glen Powell  04:50

one is incredible. It will only make one better. But Iโ€™ll just say thereโ€™s

Monica Barbaro  04:54

so much for you to go see this movie. And with a for the past year. Do we have to drown to like, do this to pass this water test? We I mean, unbelievable amounts of work so it will just cry. Atrocious to admit

Nestor Aparicio  05:13

itself. He sat down he said heโ€™d never seen you like in a trade like anything other than the movie get recognized recognize you like an astronaut?

Monica Barbaro  05:21

Yeah, well, thank you actually,

Glen Powell  05:24

ya know, you came across as a legitimate fighter pilot. Weโ€™re around. Yeah, how many? How many? How many female fighter pilots would you say?

Monica Barbaro  05:32

You met lows? Itโ€™s a low percentage. I got to fly with all women. And they were absolutely awesome, intelligent, cool, competent, talented, just complete. completely awesome. So it was a real honor to get to represent them in this but youโ€™re also representing

Glen Powell  05:47

that entire group in this movie, and you freaking crush it. But thatโ€™s the funny part is that I have not seen Monica and address. Iโ€™ve seen her in a flight suit for the past year. So it is it is funny where weโ€™re now doing press on this movie. And we basically been living on military base for the past year. And so itโ€™s almost like reintroducing yourself to your friends. Do

Nestor Aparicio  06:07

they let you eat real food? There are no I mean, we live on the military base. Yeah, yeah. As a military.

Monica Barbaro  06:16

Cater, but on the boat we ate, you know, on the carrier we ate carrier food. So food?

Glen Powell  06:22

Yeah, yes. Weโ€™re on the Roosevelt.

Nestor Aparicio  06:24

Internationally Trained actress mean, do you get to get ready for these roles? Right, youโ€™re gonna get immersed? Yes. Right. Yeah.

Monica Barbaro  06:28

And we? And we did it was it? Yeah, theyโ€™re, theyโ€™re all the same amongst them, you know, like, you donโ€™t you donโ€™t, itโ€™s not different. When youโ€™re talking to a female pilot or a male pilot. They they operate the same way they have the same standards. They work very well together. Itโ€™s itโ€™s really cool. And and I think thatโ€™s how we thatโ€™s how we did this movie.

Glen Powell  06:51

But also creating like, Tom was always about creating an immersive experience. So staying on the base, staying on the boat. Living with these pilots, basically, for the past year, it feels more like a pilot than I do an actor. You know, youโ€™re youโ€™re very much in this.

Monica Barbaro  07:05

Yeah, we did more aviation than we did acting, I would say that in the making of this movie. And it needed to be because weโ€™re playing something that you donโ€™t just, you donโ€™t just like walk through a door one day and youโ€™re a pilot, you give it your all and you give it a lot of time. And in order to wear that on your body. You know, we actually reshot one scene because after a period of time, we had become so much more pilot like when we then when we were when we first shot the scene that they were like, oh, no, we need to see what you what you have now. So you know that immersive experience really changes the performance different

Glen Powell  07:38

level of swagger when youโ€™re actually a pilot rather than when youโ€™re trying to pretend to be on top gun

Nestor Aparicio  07:42

Maverick movie, Glen Powell. Monica, Barbara. Oh, here on the set. This will be the one thing you do you sit down with the guy that doesnโ€™t watch movies. And

Monica Barbaro  07:50

honestly, this was quite fun. We both lean forward, we pitched this should know. And you guys are

Nestor Aparicio  07:56

young and beautiful. Like I was in San Diego when they shot the original. What did you see? Topcon. When does it come to you as an? You werenโ€™t of that age was came out?

Monica Barbaro  08:07

I saw it when I was in college actually. Okay, for the first time as an

Nestor Aparicio  08:11

iconic movie, right as

Monica Barbaro  08:12

like an 80s classic. It was the same thing. Like what is wrong with you? You havenโ€™t seen this movie. And I saw and I was like, yeah, thatโ€™s fun. That was great.

Glen Powell  08:20

I started when I was 10 years old. Youโ€™re gonna see it when youโ€™re what? 51? Yeah, you say 5151. Yeah, so thatโ€™s too late. I saw Yeah, you know, thatโ€™s important. Thatโ€™s important. Thatโ€™s the thatโ€™ll, thatโ€™ll fuel you as long as we are fueling you in the right direction. Iโ€™m just gonna let you know. Youโ€™re gonna be like, how did I live this long? Without Top Gun?

Nestor Aparicio  08:41

Crank up the Kenny Loggins. Letโ€™s go. Glen Powell your Top Gun Maverick? Whenโ€™s it open? June 26. June 26. Summer, summer, summer movie. Yeah. Good luck to you guys. Such a pleasure. My wifeโ€™s gonna make me see them. Jennifer. You guys were so nice to you, Jennifer. For youโ€™re gonna watch it. You see Napoleon Dynamite. So now youโ€™re gonna

Monica Barbaro  09:05

tell us if he doesnโ€™t heโ€™s looking

Nestor Aparicio  09:06

at me with just otter Hollywood. Monica farmborough Top Gun Maverick coming at you. 26. We already wrote Miami Beach from Super Bowl 54 Back for more right after this.
