Hey, welcome home. We are W, N, S T. Am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. I don’t know how I’m going to do this here today, but we’re doing a Maryland crab cake tour. I am amongst the men who taught me and made me the man that I am. Calvin stadium is here. George Shulman is here. I’m not allowed to call you Mr. Statum. I gotta get I gotta get your headset where you need to be. How are you to do doing today? Because when I saw you last week, you’re tickling the ivories, and you were leading the congregation like a man a third of your age, not even a half of your age, maybe a third of your age, a
Calvin Statham 00:37
third of my age. Okay. Now, what did you want to know?
Nestor Aparicio 00:42
How did you get so good at playing the piano and entertaining people? Because you made me cry in a church the other night. Good, George. Did you cry? I wept. Right? This man here taught 1000s of East Baltimore children and West Baltimore children, and so George Shulman is my guest. He was not my science teacher, but was a science teacher at Holly bird Junior High in the 70s. Calvin stated, Mr. Stadium was my music teacher from 1963 he taught 59 keep saying, 57 years, 59 years. You talk Correct. 59 what schools? Let’s go through them in order.
Calvin Statham 01:22
Holbert, you can’t go through them in order. But they didn’t come in order. I started at Holly bird junior high school, 1962 September, 1962 I was sent there purposely to meet up with
Nestor Aparicio 01:41
you, to fix people like me, yes, to save souls.
Calvin Statham 01:45
To save souls. That’s why I went there. And I stayed there until I was requested. I had been requested to go to New School, which was Pikesville junior high school.
Nestor Aparicio 02:01
What years is early 70s. Man, I forgot what they were on together. That’s fine.
Calvin Statham 02:05
But anyhow, it was a new school, and the principal of that at Dundalk middle school wanted me and no one else to teach the music in that building. Dundalk Middle School. No, no, yeah, he was the principal at Dundalk middle, but he that’s where you when I did my fair lady, because they had a stage in Dundalk, but he was going to Pikesville, okay, to open this new school. And He came to the show, to one of the show, the last show I think I did at Dundalk middle was that My Fair Lady, maybe it might have been, it might have been because he told me that evening, I want to see you after this show. I said, Okay, did
Nestor Aparicio 02:46
he tell you that you miscast Louis vashoni as Freddy instead of me in that show? He didn’t
Calvin Statham 02:51
say anything like that. He just said, I was a fantastic teacher,
Nestor Aparicio 02:56
Louis, you know, I love you. But anyway,
Calvin Statham 03:00
he said, I would love to have you as a teacher in a school of mine. That that’s how he greeted me. And then, and then you went, and the rest was history. But you made your way back to Holabird. Yes, I did. And I meant to come back
Nestor Aparicio 03:13
to get to get to me, to fix me. No, you were gone. My dear friend Bruce share had you as a teacher pub. I guess early 70s. I guess it must have been because I was I was, I was late 70s at Holberg is a little older than me, and he tells me, you’re as be loved in Pikesville. I take you over to Chili’s right now, and you’d be as be loved as you are right here in Costa. And I’m looking at Mr. Costas pictures right here. He’s staring at me the whole time. We lost him this year. So it’s a special to be with, to be here at Costas. Yes, it is, it is. And you live in this you live in the spares point Edgemere area, George, I want to pick it up with you, because Calvin, Miss Shane has been coming and doing the show every year, ever since I started annoying him six, seven years ago, and usually Laurie and Jerry, Piper and Jerry gave his kidney 48 hours ago, and could not bring Mr. Statum over to cost us today, last week, about a month ago, Mr. Corn contoy Honest, his daughter threw me a note on LinkedIn and said that Calvin stadium is doing Christmas caroling and cookies. So I’m like, I’ma call Mr. Stadium, five a I’m not I’m not interested in him. I was there for the cookies. So I said, What kind of cookies we have? I called you and you said, they’re gonna be really good cookies, is what you told me. Okay, so I said, I’ll come watch you play a little bit see how to see what your fans look like at the advanced age of 85 on Valentine’s Day. Mr. Stadium. So I got in the car and I drove down to Edgemere, parked my car, came in, and you looked at me like you usually look at me, and said, What did you say? I don’t know. Who are you? That’s what you said to me. Way he greets me. It’s love you get. 50 years later, and I sat in the church pew, and they handed out the hymn also for all the songs, some of them. Knew, and some of them were songs I did not know. Well, one of them on my phone that I’m going to ask you about, because I had never sang this one, but I’ve been singing it at home. Okay, it’s a song about Jesus.
George Scheulen 05:10
It’s what a surprise. But
Nestor Aparicio 05:15
it’s not, oh come all you faithful heart to herald. It’s not one of one’s amazing grace. I knew it was a different one. So I sat in a church pew, and I had Heather Hollingsworth next to me, and I’m waiting a Laurie Piper to come in. I’m holding her seat, and Calvin breaks into song, and we’re doing Joy to the world. So and I looked over, and George Shulman is 15 feet away from me. He winked at me, and I went back in front of him. Was Ingrid Cole stat. It was the first girl ever had a crush on. And I went up there. She went back. And then I looked over to the left, and I saw Laurie that I grew up with, I give her maiden name or her married name, and and she smiled at me, and I smiled back. And the craziest thing, Calvin, I was not expecting this, and I don’t get too emotional, but I was in seventh grade again when you started yelling at everybody in the church. You’re like, that’s not good enough. That’s fair. This is what you were doing. You did, you know I have you on video. Don’t deny it. Don’t be like Trump and be denying things you don’t say. All right, you said fair. That was fair. Do better than that. Man. This was like, I felt like I was getting a B minus, and my parents are gonna be upset with me. So you are forever a teacher, and when I saw you last Wednesday, it brought me back to my childhood, and I just had to bring you out here this week and tell you how much I love you and tell you how happy you make people. You bring so much joy to people. Mr. Statum, am I wrong? George, doubt me. I was enjoying
George Scheulen 07:09
that, right? That’s I really like Calvin. He makes me happy. I started working at Haliburton 73 so he was already there a long time, and I started working with the stage crew, and me and my buddy Dave, fantastic. We were his stage crew, and he was everybody was petrified of including us, but we decided. We decided we weren’t going to allow that to get in our way of having fun. So while everybody else was calling him Calvin or Mr. Statum fan, and I decided we’re gonna call him Vinnie. So we used to call him Vinny, Calvin, Cal Vinnie.
Nestor Aparicio 07:47
Now Fantasie. Tell everybody about Fantasia, because he was like real Dundalk blood.
George Scheulen 07:52
He went to Dundalk middle went to Dundalk high school, went to a DCC. When it was before it had a campus. When it was I went to DCC, but when it was still in Dundalk, and in the it was in the high school, all over the place, right? Yeah, it was all over the place. And then he went to UMBC to finish. But yeah, Dave and his wife worked at whatever the GM, and yeah, they lived down there in the apartments near Dundalk elementary he
Nestor Aparicio 08:17
was my seventh grade son. I never had Mr. Shul. And by the way, even though we went to middle school and high school together, you came to Dundalk, but you met Calvin in 73
George Scheulen 08:26
right shows, 22 years old, and I went into halberd, and I didn’t know anybody. I didn’t even know how to get to Dundalk. Somebody had told me how to get there poly. I was in the city. I didn’t go to.
Calvin Statham 08:43
Now, you grew up on the east side, right? Mr. Statham, I grew up in Sparrows Point, and you haven’t left. You’re still here. I’m still here.
Nestor Aparicio 08:51
So the church that you played in the other night for us. Can you tell us about that church? Because I had never been there. I had the invite for cookies, and I came down to see you. And when I came in there, it was very clear. There were people who loved you the way I love you from school. And there were people that were there as part of your church and part of the community. Part it looked like that piano is your piano. I mean, it was mobbed people.
George Scheulen 09:16
They had people seeding us. You know, it’s like, well, here’s two. I had
Nestor Aparicio 09:19
to get up and leave an hour in because I had a prior obligation. I felt good because I let somebody in the back sit down because I had been sitting down. I do you do that every year, or is that something that you
Calvin Statham 09:29
just treated was the second? Yeah, I did it. Well, we’re gonna have
Nestor Aparicio 09:33
to find a bigger church, and we’re gonna have to have three cities. It’s gonna have to be like two, five and eight cookies. You perform, Mr. Statum, you did. You sang a beautiful song to us.
Calvin Statham 09:44
Well, I mean, I didn’t particularly pick a song. I just thought of a song and I started
Nestor Aparicio 09:54
the words of I would have brought to him, though, here today, but to him, though, when they handed it to me. The nice man at the church. It’s a church man. Hand this to me. I said, thank you very much. I’m like, if you’ve ever met Mr. Stan, he’s not gonna stick to it. He’s gonna do what he wants to do. And that’s exactly what you darn well did.
Speaker 1 10:13
And I want to keep this one straight too.
Nestor Aparicio 10:16
Hold on. I got, I actually have the song you sang, and hold on, I’m gonna play it. I’m gonna maybe I can get it to play through my headset, if I can, if I turn it off, because I I have you. It was just such a George, you. You got teary eye like
George Scheulen 10:32
I looked over when Madeline was singing on the on the screen. I have
Nestor Aparicio 10:36
all of that. I have three minutes and 41 seconds of your wife singing, his wife, his wife, so. But I have 57 seconds of you doing a song. Here, hold on me say, Here,
10:51
what was the name of it? It was that one was John singing, too.
George Scheulen 10:56
No, I was always sitting going,
Nestor Aparicio 11:00
Jesus. Jesus.
11:04
Oh, what a wonderful child. Oh yeah. New life
Calvin Statham 11:11
to all it brings. Listen to the angel sing, glory, glory, glory to
Nestor Aparicio 11:21
the new he slowed it down. Yeah, as that, that was it.
George Scheulen 11:31
So I and what people aren’t seeing is playing the pub. You know, that’s
Nestor Aparicio 11:37
and it said it was a gospel, a traditional black gospel song, Christmas song, yes,
George Scheulen 11:43
I didn’t know and I didn’t know
Calvin Statham 11:44
it. You weren’t a black traditional,
Nestor Aparicio 11:48
black traditional music teacher,
11:51
but you did that. You
George Scheulen 11:52
were not a black tradition. I wasn’t traditional.
Nestor Aparicio 11:57
You untraditional?
George Scheulen 11:59
Yeah, I’m so non traditional.
12:01
He’s always, never been.
Nestor Aparicio 12:07
That’s why you guys got along, probably right. So you guys were colleagues for a good pull 20 years, 10
George Scheulen 12:15
years, I started in 73 and left in 83 and he was around that same
Nestor Aparicio 12:20
time leaving, pretend he’s not listening, and pretend that somebody asked me, yeah, no, why were you there? Well, how did you find out about his church and the cookies?
George Scheulen 12:31
Oh, I saw it from you. I saw it on your on your site, and I said, Oh, gosh, that’d be something that she said, Well, we got to go, so we put it on the calendar, and it was
Nestor Aparicio 12:41
like I felt the same way. I had tickets that I bought that night in Anne Arundel County to go to the cure. The band was only one night. I bought the tickets in October for that thing, and it was sold out. His phone’s ring and his family’s yelling, and that’s all right, tell me do a radio. He’s got a flip phone. He’s got a flip phone. Oh my god, Mr. Mr. Stadium, got a flip phone. So that night, I felt like I had my wife’s out of town. She’s like, you got to go. I’m like, of course, I’m gonna go. But I didn’t know what I was getting into. Mr. Stadium, you know what I mean, I knew I was going to a church, and I knew you were playing. And I wasn’t like, I was taking pity on you, because I know how popular. I remember when you retired at it Martin’s way. Hold on a second. You mean, well, I didn’t want to be I was afraid nobody was gonna come, so I came. But then I thought, why? You know what I thought was when Mr. Stadium, when Mr. Statum had his retirement party in Woodlawn, there were like 1000 people there, and I’m like, I better get there early, is what I did. You did and I did. I got there earlier. I wouldn’t have seen and you knew that. Course, I knew that Nestor,
George Scheulen 13:49
the same thing happened at my retirement party. I just Tracy had a big retirement part party for me at Martin’s East Calvin came, and Calvin and Madeline
Nestor Aparicio 13:59
are at this table. 4646 years six. All right, so sorry, my Michael, he was
George Scheulen 14:04
a youngster. Yeah, I was just a kid. So Calvin and Madeline are sitting at this table. It was like the hive with the bees coming home. Everybody had to go, Oh, Mr. Everybody just came to you. He came. They came. All came back being at the wedding. They all came to him.
Nestor Aparicio 14:18
Yep, anybody that’s more beloved than him? I mean, I’m just being really honest with you, and I embarrass him, but I when I bring his name you, you have provided so much joy, and you really angered me in the church that night. So I’m Why did I anger you? There was a point. And George, you remember this, he’s taking the piano, and he’s it. He’s so in his element there, like he’s holding that key over my head. He’s gonna hit me that he’s tickling the piano and he’s telling stories and he’s teaching people. And he says, Now, you do know that if I make it to Valentine’s Day, if I make I’ll be 80 by I said, when, when? And a couple knuckleheads from Dundalk said to me, February 14. You’re not listening to him. I said. He said, If he turns 185 you are eternal.
George Scheulen 15:08
Calvin, okay, people gonna remember forever. Calvin, I swear to God, I
Nestor Aparicio 15:15
saw you playing the piano last week, and I’m like, you play the piano the same way you played a piano. Like, is it like riding a bike?
Speaker 1 15:26
Well, sometimes you fall off. Do you forget anything?
Nestor Aparicio 15:30
Do you forget so very seldom, that’s the thing that I want to be you when I’m your I want to remember everything you know.
Calvin Statham 15:39
I think you’re doing a pretty good
George Scheulen 15:41
job memory. I got a question for you. Why do you change key at the last chorus? Just to keep you from being bored?
Calvin Statham 15:49
No, because I like to make people sing in a
Speaker 1 15:52
different key. That’s what I thought. He changed keys every time. I want to
Calvin Statham 15:56
see if they could follow exactly what I was doing. And they did well,
Nestor Aparicio 16:00
yes, they did. So here’s what he was doing that scared the crab cake out of me. Okay, I’m there. He knows I’m leaving early because I already told him. And he always, always singled me out in class. He don’t remember this, but he would play this little song. Was like, a Johnny be good. It was like, go, go. Nestor, go. He would play this little thing. And I thought he might.
Calvin Statham 16:27
It went like this, go ahead. It will say, I would say, go, go, go, Nestor, go, go, go, go, go, Nestor, go.
16:36
Nestor, be good. Ne good.
Nestor Aparicio 16:40
He would sing this to me all the time as I would come in the class, and I was much little smaller than everybody else. So during the church event last Wednesday, no, what’s the name of the church? I want to promote everything.
Calvin Statham 16:51
John. St, John Christian. No. St, John Lutheran, this is your parish. No, I’m a Protestant. I’m Baptist, okay, but I’m praying for them. Now, let me tell you about that a friend of my wife’s, they work together, and I was leaving the church that I was the organist for because I was tired, and I said, Well, I’m going to retire from playing for church. I was I said what I was saying to myself and to Madeline, I said, I’m tired. Now I’m getting kind of tired, so I’m going to go back home and just go to church. When I feel like going to church, I would go to a church, and I would like to go to different churches so that I can talk to the people in different churches. But anyhow, when I left red hope Baptist Church in Baltimore City, the next day, a friend of Madeline’s came from Dundalk elementary school to ask me if I would come and play for this particular church. I said, No, I don’t think so. She said, Well, just come to the service on Sunday and see if you would like us. I said, I’m sure I would like you. Why would you want to worry about me liking you? If I come to see you, I’m going to like you. She said, Well, just promise me you’ll come. I said, Okay, I’ll be there. Well, they were the nicest people, and then I knew people there. I knew some of the people who worked with my father in Sparrow’s Point at Bethlehem Steel Company. And I knew people who worked with my wife. I knew people who worked with my sisters. So it was just like being at home, but I did not go there to take to take
Nestor Aparicio 18:37
a job. How long have you been sitting at that piano in the corner in that congregation, it felt like home. I went up. It just felt like I was in your class again, and I was coming to visit you, and we all came to your classroom. And here’s where it got scary, George, I’ve been riding Calvin since 1981 about not giving me the part of Freddy in My Fair Lady, and he started calling people up to sing solos at this church. And I thought, I better have a song, you know, in this book, if Cal because Calvin’s looking around and he’s he’s tickling, and he’s, Hi, George Tracy, how you doing tonight? It’s good. Like, are you ready to sing? So he’s playing and playing. And I thought for sure he was gonna look at I didn’t. I was slinking down behind Heather. I’m like, I hope he didn’t look at me, because if you caught on me, oh, come all you faith.
Calvin Statham 19:38
That’s my favorite Carol.
Nestor Aparicio 19:41
I heard James Ingram sing that one night in Atlantic City at a Christmas show with Sheena Easton and Patty Austin and pibo Bryson. I went up to Atlanta city with my girlfriend 30 years ago, and I sat in the second row and I saw James Ingram Sing, oh, come all you faithful. And it was. One of the most powerful things I’ve ever seen. So if you had called on me, I was gonna I was ready no for you. I had looked at it. I’m like, if he calls on me, he’s a teacher, I gotta stand up. I can’t say, you know, I gotta stand up. Have the answer to the quiz. I was really worried he were gonna call on me.
Calvin Statham 20:18
But the point is this, that was my favorite Carol.
Nestor Aparicio 20:22
The point is, I fear, and everybody does See, that’s why. So on video, you thought of assault. About assault me, since you not, you’ve never $3 winner. All right, we gotta wear it. All right. All right. Love winners. All right. Thank you, sir. All right.
Calvin Statham 20:44
You’ve never heard that song until you’ve heard Madeline and I sing it together.
Nestor Aparicio 20:50
Now was that part of it? You have it on video the way you did the video that night.
Calvin Statham 20:54
I really never taped us doing it, but we had it when she was singing all over night on the thing that’s when that
Nestor Aparicio 21:01
was an MPT special, yeah, from back in the 80s. I can tell one from George. I called Calvin 10 days ago about the cookies, and I said, Listen, you better get your Wheaties eat rest. You’re getting older. I’m worried that, you know, the church, you I’m gonna come down that night. And I said, How are the cookies? And you said, the cookies are good. And you told me. He said, You tell everybody that I’m doing something special that night. And he said to me, I’m going to do something special that night. And I thought you were just being you just talk, you know, special. And then we got there. First off, the teacher thing got me. I started getting I saw him. He saw me. It wasn’t good for a moment. I got myself together. And I thought he’s gonna call on me to sing. I better, like, get myself together. And then, then he three songs in Jesus, oh, what a wonderful then he’s done. He’s like, all right, I got something special for y’all. And then a screen drops, and your wife appears with you. You were looking a little younger then, and rings on every finger, and she’s saying, Oh, holy nut. It’s three minutes and 41 seconds here. And if I put it all right now, we’re all gonna cry. But I videoed it. I have it all. I shot it from the back. It sounds beautiful. I’ll play it for you before we leave, so we cry at the end. But where did you come up with that idea to pull that video? Because that we were a mess. All of us were a mess. Yeah, we love your wife.
Calvin Statham 22:33
Just a minute. Just a minute. I was hopeful that I would be able to bring Madeline Patrick, and I would be able to bring her to that to the church, okay, that was our objective, okay, but because of her illness, it was not really progressing. Yes, it was impossible.
Nestor Aparicio 22:54
But you brought her. I mean, you brought her. No, who did you bring her?
Calvin Statham 22:58
And I wanted a friend of mine at the church. His name was Rick, and I asked him about it, and he said, I think I can manage that for you. I said, okay, but I had given Rick two tapes. I had given him a tape of me with my singers and Madeline singing, oh holy night with my singers, backgrounding her. That was not the tape that he chose. He chose a tape that we had never sat down to listen to. Oh Maverick, nor I had heard that tape. We had made the tape in New York,
Nestor Aparicio 23:40
but we did. It was a part of an MPT, yeah, that
Calvin Statham 23:44
was not no different. Okay, then New York, okay. We were singing at Abyssinia Baptist Church in New York. Reverend Adam Clayton, Powell, oh, I’ll be darn and then we went, we did the same song at the Apollo Theater, yeah, the wards, the Apollo with the ward, Claire Ward, Clara Ward, yes, but we never sat down. We sang it, but we never sat down to listen to it, to see
Nestor Aparicio 24:10
the first time you saw her sing that, and that piece of tape was that was with us,
Calvin Statham 24:14
with you all that night. That was my first time hearing it.
Nestor Aparicio 24:18
Well, I have it on tape here forever, and I’m not giving it to any I’m not giving
Calvin Statham 24:22
it up. Look Good. Don’t give it up. Keep it and i belongs
Nestor Aparicio 24:25
on YouTube. It belongs where people can share it every year, where you share it,
Speaker 2 24:30
I’m sure it every Christmas. Look Good, good. But I mean, and the next
Nestor Aparicio 24:33
100 Christmases, you’re gonna tickle the piano down at the church. We’re gonna have to do three viewings. You’re gonna be like, like, Liberace. We’re gonna have to have you,
Calvin Statham 24:43
Nestor, hold it. Hold it.
George Scheulen 24:46
You do. Oh, yes, sir,
Nestor Aparicio 24:50
I kept showing the cane.
George Scheulen 24:51
No, I don’t need to show me the cane.
Calvin Statham 24:57
Let me say something about that other night when. Was it Wednesday night,
George Scheulen 25:03
Thursday night last week?
Calvin Statham 25:07
Now that caught me totally off guard. Now I’m telling you that now, but I did have friends who were calling me, telling me I planned to be there, but they never said that they were bringing all their family members, and they never said that they were bringing other people who had been my students. So I guess the thing that made me so so overjoyed was the fact that there were grown ups there, and I started looking at them, and I said, Wait a minute. I taught this one, I taught that one, and this and that. And I said, How many of you were my students? Dude, it was Mr.
Nestor Aparicio 25:46
Holland’s Opus. It was two
George Scheulen 25:49
thirds of the church,
Calvin Statham 25:50
yet it was and I couldn’t believe that. And then I looked in front of them, and I said, Well, I taught their children too. Yep, and their children were grown now.
Nestor Aparicio 26:03
59 years of teaching in Baltimore County will do this. Mr. Statham, yes, and 46 more from shuling over here. That was unbelievable. That was always my joke. Nine years, 46 years of teaching. And you wonder why I’m honoring these humans. It cost us. It’s amazing. I wish I would have given you a winning
Speaker 1 26:22
lottery about it too. You know, you’re a winner, you’re here with me and Mrs. You and me, you’re we feel bad about that, don’t we didn’t get we had a winner. We didn’t care about you winning. You winning. They she and I wanted to
George Scheulen 26:33
win, yeah, $30,000 or something. But my joke always Nestor was that a kid would come to me and go, Oh, you taught my mother. I remember that. I said, first time a kid comes to me and says, you taught my grandmother, I was gonna slap that kid and go, I’m out of here. You taught my grandmother. I don’t think I ever
Nestor Aparicio 26:53
had one. Lot of people taught me and my son, because my son went to Colgate, right? So Miss half my favorite teacher taught my son, but
Calvin Statham 27:00
Nestor, I didn’t finish talking go. He keep going.
Nestor Aparicio 27:04
I got mal doing here, singing. So
Calvin Statham 27:06
yes, but I mean, Mavin will be there to sing as soon as I finished talking point, the cane at me. Did you hear what I said that night when they they were clapping up for Maverick? And I said, Yeah, but what name came first on that tape. Did it say Madeline stadium, or did it say Calvin? Calvin state it said Calvin stadium. So I always taught Madeline how to respect her husband, always, Oh, that’s true. Always the Calvin stadium singers, the Calvin stadium singers, right? Exactly. That’s what they have been then, when I went to sing with and pray for them, with the Clara Ward singers, then I became one of the Clara Ward singers. But Clara Ward, who was the most famous gospel singer in this country, her mother and her sister, Willow Ward and Mrs. Gertrude Ward, they said I was the best player they have ever had in their lives. And when they made recordings and different things, they sent for me, you see, because I had a certain way of playing that they loved, and it
Nestor Aparicio 28:16
there could have been no one else that night, if I close my eyes, it was you playing a piano. Exactly. That was the part of seventh. So I must say this about Mr. Stadium. I had a lot of teachers through my years, but I had you more than anyone else. Again. No, no, no, I had you more. I had you for three years because you were Oh, because you hit her, okay,
Calvin Statham 28:38
but that that sound. But Mrs. Shoe and is saving your life right now. She’s not, yes, she is too.
Nestor Aparicio 28:44
You got the cane, but you’re in charge.
Calvin Statham 28:48
But Mrs. Shoe and is edging me on.
Nestor Aparicio 28:53
I know how good a piano player you still are at 84 and three quarters, because I witnessed it the other night.
Speaker 3 28:58
You witnessed and it’s a marvel. It’s a marvel.
Nestor Aparicio 29:01
What’s the part that I but for anyone who’s but Nestor, I saw Paul McCartney. He’s your age, Nestor, it’s amazing to me, Nestor.
Calvin Statham 29:09
That’s all Nestor. When I started learning to play the piano, I think I was about three or four years old, that you have to understand that it’s like walking to you. No, my sister, my oldest sister, was my teacher. My daddy played piano. He played piano, and he wanted all of his children to play piano and organ also. So my sister grabbed me and taught me. Now, I didn’t want to take music lessons at first, but she gave me no choice. She was a tough cookie. My sister and she was not one of those cookies that you eat. She was just a tough cookie. She said, Yes, you’re going to play and I’m going to teach you. And so, sure enough, she and I you could, you could hardly tell her. Go. Playing from mine, because we play it almost
Nestor Aparicio 30:04
a light for you, how many days would be the most you’ve ever gone without playing? Will you play that today? Sure tomorrow, you play every day of your life. You’ll play No no, no, no, no, just for fun at the house, you go home tonight and play
Calvin Statham 30:16
a little once in a while, once in a while, I don’t have time to play it for myself, because we’re always called to play for other people.
Nestor Aparicio 30:24
Well, then I want to come see you play more often. Can you can we get you a home page that says Calvin’s playing? And you can tell me, because right now it’s Christmas, but I’m sure in the spring, but I’ll be doing
George Scheulen 30:34
telling me about his schedule, but yes, schedule is ridiculous.
Nestor Aparicio 30:38
Stay so young. Me here because you’re active on your side. That mean, I’m getting ganged up on I think so. Okay, then what were you saying? I want waiting for you. I talked too much. You told me that. Yeah, tell me again. What were you saying? You You say you play a lot, but you, I saw you do Christmas music last week, when you say you get called to play, are you playing standards? Are you playing sentimental journey? What are we playing?
Calvin Statham 31:07
I play any kind of music that people like, but I specialize in my music that I like now. Christmas music is my favorite kind of music. I love Christmas period. Then being with my students is the favorite thing of my life. Do you understand that
Nestor Aparicio 31:30
I saw that last Wednesday? It’s one of our favorite things.
Calvin Statham 31:33
And being with my older students, and seeing my older students who were the parents, and then seeing the younger students who were my students, also, am I one of the older ones? Now, I think, as you might be, and I would look at them, I was looking, I don’t know if you noticed me looking at my audience so much. And what I was doing was picking out all the grown people that I had taught
Nestor Aparicio 31:58
at Holly bird junior high. That’s why I was afraid you were gonna call on me, but
Calvin Statham 32:02
I did, and I knew them. I knew them. My mind triggered back to them. I could see them as children.
Nestor Aparicio 32:10
Can you believe that? But it’s true. You still think of me as 12, even though I’m 57
Calvin Statham 32:14
No, I know exactly what you are. But anyhow,
Nestor Aparicio 32:17
because he had me for three years,
Calvin Statham 32:20
but my older children that where they were not children. They were grown ups with children. That was the thrill of my life to see parents and children that I had taught from the same family that really now that filled me with, I can’t say how much joy, but it did. Now I’m real serious about that, because I want people to know the truth. That was really true. I loved it. It was it was an exciting time.
Nestor Aparicio 32:54
Let’s do it again. Well, Christmas Carol, too much. Can we
Speaker 2 32:59
know you can’t do it too much. Now, really call on me next year. I better be ready. I can be,
Calvin Statham 33:04
you know, a little tired. Now get a little tired, but I try to keep it going. I try to keep it all right.
Nestor Aparicio 33:10
Well, I’m gonna come see you play. You gotta let me know my wife would miss the Christmas thing, and she’s been watching all the videos. She’s friends with Lori, so she saw the videos right away. She hit me. I said, Oh, I got more videos. And I put up the Jesus song. I put that up on Sunday. I’m saving Joy to the world, where you yell at everybody in the church and tell them they could do better. I haven’t he did it. I have 33 seconds of that. I’m gonna put that up on Christmas morning. You telling people you can do better, you know you can say a little, but they could all right, well, I’m gonna come rehearse with you, man, I got to do on the street where you live with you once before I die, not you, because you know you’re gonna live to be forever. Okay? 85 years old on Valentine’s Day. She were born on the Love Day. Right? Literally, right. Wow. 85 what years that make it? 3041? 41 not 31 that make you really old. 1941 1941 right before Pearl Harbor. Yeah, you were live, right? Yeah, wow.
Calvin Statham 34:14
My father always reminded me of that.
34:19
Maybe that’s why you were so explosive.
Nestor Aparicio 34:24
Calvin Statham is my guest. He was my seventh, eighth and ninth grade music teacher, and when I thought about why I feel so close to him, I never think about if you had teachers at home. You didn’t have a teacher for three years often, you know, I mean George Shulman taught some people twice, because he taught at two different schools. But George taught for 46 years. Calvin taught for 59 years. They’re Dundalk legends. George taught at Sparrows. But did you teach spares point to No, You never taught there. You just from Sparrows Point and Mr. Statum tickled the ivories last week for a sold out crowd down at the church in Edgemere, and we had fun.
Calvin Statham 34:56
It was not a sold out crowd, it was a crowd of. Friends, there’s a difference that’s a different
Nestor Aparicio 35:04
what’s gonna happen next year when people can’t get in because I’m bringing everybody I know, and I put the videos up, and if you haven’t, you’ve already told me there’s another lost video of malvilin. And you know, you say several, well, let’s get them all next year we’re gonna have to unearth a new one.
Calvin Statham 35:22
Well, if you promise to go into my closet and go and get all of them out, that’ll be a deal.
Nestor Aparicio 35:27
Greg Landry from Towson transfers, does this work? He takes video tapes and turns them into exactly what you want. So I’m gonna come pick those up. I’m gonna drop them off the box.
Calvin Statham 35:40
I can’t let you take them away, though,
Nestor Aparicio 35:43
no joy when you’re gonna get them Tran
Calvin Statham 35:45
I’ll get someone to come to me.
Nestor Aparicio 35:47
Greg will be over your house. Greg over your house.
Calvin Statham 35:50
I cannot let them go out of my sight.
Nestor Aparicio 35:54
Nice. I’ll bring the machine over. We’ll figure out. So you have more than just the one video we have this.
Calvin Statham 36:02
I have nothing but videos and everything.
Nestor Aparicio 36:04
They need to be up on YouTube so this can be enjoyed by the world.
Calvin Statham 36:07
We have performances that Disneyland have. We have performances that Las Vegas
Nestor Aparicio 36:17
summer would go touring when school was over. You would go with the Claire award singers and all over the
Calvin Statham 36:23
country, all over the country. Yes,
George Scheulen 36:25
I remember when he would do when He and, I guess it was the state of singers.
Speaker 3 36:29
Did I get you out of wait, I’m on your side again. I was gonna say how everybody loved it when you guys
Speaker 1 36:37
would do the show. Get you outside, okay, but that means, doesn’t mean I have to make you walk home. That’s right, I got to walk.
George Scheulen 36:45
Oh, Tracy said she’ll drive you.
36:46
Yeah, I got a friend who will drive me and you.
Calvin Statham 36:54
Yes, that’s my baby singing. Do you like that? Yes, I do, but that was my first time hearing it.
Nestor Aparicio 37:05
This is so good. I love you. Give me a hug. I want to get let you go get some crab soup. You’re sick of me, right? Did I allow you to talk enough? Because I don’t want to be accused of that? Yeah, you act like
Speaker 2 37:21
it’s not my show. Finish here, and my wife,
Nestor Aparicio 37:24
oh, I’d send this over to I’ll text you, see you right now. Of course, here,
Calvin Statham 37:28
let me see it right now, not in my face than my nose.
Nestor Aparicio 37:32
Well, you want to hear it here. Hold on. I gotta turn my headset up to do that. Hold on again. I’ll get it right. Hold on here. I just, I just exited the video. Hold on, I’ll get it right for you. Get it. I’ll get it right for you. Don’t you worry. Hold on. Let’s go. I got it. I need smaller fingers. Is what. I’m dizzy.
George Scheulen 37:50
He gets you that way some, sometimes he gets, he gets the chat. Oh, I
Nestor Aparicio 38:08
look at how happy he is. I gotta take a break. Okay? I’ll let you watch here. You take this. It’s all brought to you by friends at the Maryland Lotter. You got candy cane cash. We’re doing a little radio show here. Calvin’s here. He’s 84 years young. Shulance, 29 and holding, love you, dude. Appreciate you. I don’t even talk any science with you, man.
George Scheulen 38:27
I don’t know nothing about no dang sign. I was too busy singing, hey, is the
Nestor Aparicio 38:33
earth round? George? Yeah, I believe, I believe it’s around. All right, get teach me that we’re back for more cost. Is John maroon is going to be here. I’m also going to be joined by some other friends in the final hour. John Allen’s going to be here. We’re going to be talking about my buddy Ed Lauer, who had a heart transplant a month ago and is alive and well, and Jay’s taking care of him and Tracy. So we’re going to do that with John Allen back for more. We’re at Costas. We’re listening to all holy night. I am rehearsing my Oh, come all you faithful version,
George Scheulen 39:01
that’s what we got to sing. To go out, we got to sing, oh, come on, you faithful.
Nestor Aparicio 39:05
We’ll do that our way back in. Okay, back for more work costs. Stay with us. You.
