Welcome home. We are WNST AM 1570 Tallison Baltimore. We’re Baltimore positive, positively getting the show back out on the road. We’re doing the Maryland Crab Cake Tour on the 19th at Fishmonger’s Daughter in Catonsville. Beautiful space. You haven’t been over there for a Faithless Crab Cake over in Catonsville, and then the 26th back at Koco’s. They’ve been on vacation this week. Let Marcela take a break and then deal with me on the 26. We’ll be at Koco’s Pub in Lauraville. All brought to you by the Maryland Lottery. I will have the Ravens scratch offs to give away. Also, our partners at GBMC and Farn and Dermer, the comfort guys. And as always, we invite our friends, our clients, our sponsors, the people who support us, the sports fans who support these franchises, on on a guy that manages money in the America Dream. We welcome Leonard Raskin back on one of our defending champions of all things, Adley Rutschman. He represents Raskin Global. They they um they manage money and take good care of people. If you listen around here, you know all about that. Um, a lot of money to manage for Zay Flowers and a lot of money saved, $30 million saved by mr. Rubenstein and mr. Elias here this week. But you know, we send the WNST text out. Obviously, it was going to be a big day on Monday because it was our 28th anniversary anyway. But there was a lot going on Monday during the trade deadline. I mean, I call you an Oriole fan, but you don’t give them money. You’re not one of those people that’s angry because you’ve given them 10 grand this year. You don’t get angry at the Ravens, and you give them a whole bunch of money as well. I I just think from a fan’s perspective, this is an interesting little soup we’re in right now, where there’s huge Raven expectation and so much change, and this Oriole thing feels like a mess.
Leonard Raskin 1:36
It’s it’s kind of crazy. You you just uh, what two weeks ago, they or a week ago even they they sign Bradish and have a big press conference about how great it is, and we’re all in. And Elias is the greatest general manager, and we’re going to keep him. And he’s doing the right thing. He’s doing a good job, even though we’re under 500, not in the wild card race yet, and then trade deadline day comes, and we trade away the the face of winning, the new winning for the Orioles. That when they started winning, it was when he came. Adley shows up. He’s got a great attitude, great bat, number one overall pick, and the team starts winning. And I guess now they’re not winning, and so he’s not a winner. I think, let’s face it, the writing clearly on the wall when they signed Sam Basayo to a long-term, large contract before the season, and said, “You’re our catcher of the future. I
Nestor Aparicio 2:43
don’t think they ever said that, Leonard. No, they
Leonard Raskin 2:45
didn’t say that out loud.
Nestor Aparicio 2:47
No, I don’t think that that was even their mind frame. Their mind frame. What were they paying
Leonard Raskin 2:51
for?
Nestor Aparicio 2:52
Well, his bat,
Leonard Raskin 2:54
right? Bat. And you’re the catcher that we want behind the plate.
Nestor Aparicio 2:58
Well, and part of the problem is because of your bet when they gave Alonzo the money and Adam McCallum, who’s going to be joining me this week, identified this early on. You block Ruchman and Basayo from playing first base. Right,
Speaker 1 3:12
that’s right. Some are making time if you’ve
Nestor Aparicio 3:14
signed a first baseman’s going to play over 40 games. What
Leonard Raskin 3:16
is it? Is it is it that a catcher, when he’s not catching, can play first base? Is it that Adley or Sam can play first base? Is it he can’t play second? He can’t play short. Can’t play third. Can’t play right field. No, you got all these other people. If
Nestor Aparicio 3:32
Ruchman wasn’t going to sign with them, it was right. Like, well, at least we have a catcher, which is what they can say to you right now. We have a catcher, and he’s going to exactly,
Leonard Raskin 3:39
exactly. And so Ruchman and I don’t know if this is true, but you hear all the rumors, of course, after he’s gone. Basically, told them through some way, shape, or form that he didn’t want to re-sign when his contract was up at the end of next year. So the question is, do you keep him another season? Hope you win and lose them, or do you get something for them? And all I can say is this: from what I’ve seen, again, I’m not you, man. I don’t read every tea leafing line here, but the people in Boston are not very happy, most of them, because they thought for sure, or they think for sure that Boston gave up way too much to get this guy, and so people in Boston, big time fans, are none too happy, and Yankee fans are none too happy because they thought they were going to get him and and give up stuff, and the only thing that makes me unhappy is that we gave him to the Red Sox. Well, that’s
Nestor Aparicio 4:47
an old school way. And listen, you’re old enough. When we dealt with the Yankees back in the 70s, gave him Fusina. No, no, no, no. In the 70s, oh, you fucked them for Scott McGregor, Rick Dempsey. We, you know, we. End up winning that trade way back,
Leonard Raskin 5:02
way back, right?
Nestor Aparicio 5:03
So these can work both ways. And when you get the young players and that roster, I mean, it’s the Machado thing that turned into Dean Kramer, right? And it was, you know, this is the next thing for all that. By the way, Leonard Raskin is your Raskin global. So we went, sent him away.
Leonard Raskin 5:23
We sent him away, and we said these kids that are gonna pop because they’re the number what two four and whatever the heck it is. Prospects in the Boston system are gonna be fabulous. So just give us another year or two, and we’ll be there again because we’re not there, and so it’s a rebuild of the rebuild, and and I wasn’t shocked by it. It was kind of like, oh, you’re giving him away, and then you get you let Ward go. Okay, that’s you know that’s here nor there. I’m not not tragically hurt about that. It’s a, it’s a. He’s a transient guy, right? I mean, he he came, he went. Okay, so what? And then we saw, didn’t didn’t he get traded for
Nestor Aparicio 6:10
Grayson Rodriguez?
Leonard Raskin 6:12
Grayson, right? Who’s gone to the Angels and not done well? Pitched pretty
Nestor Aparicio 6:17
well Tuesday night, though.
Leonard Raskin 6:18
He lost
Nestor Aparicio 6:20
game seven innings.
Leonard Raskin 6:22
He gave. Oh, it was a great outing. He
Nestor Aparicio 6:24
clearly was. You know, won his game. He’s got a seven ERA. He didn’t pitch like that on Tuesday. No, well, you know, some guys
Leonard Raskin 6:31
don’t pitch like their ERA when they face the Orioles. It’s a weird thing.
Nestor Aparicio 6:34
Well, especially the ones that are angry. They got dealt the way.
Leonard Raskin 6:38
They’re on the road.
Nestor Aparicio 6:39
But Leonard, I want to bring up the long and the short of what an astute Boston Red Sox fan, maybe our age, would say. Yes, having lived through work stoppages and good times and bad times, and understanding the game beyond the back of the bubblegum card. Really, the deeper ownership, the place you live as a financial representative for a lot of different people and ways, and understanding managing money and really asset management and resources and what that’s exactly
Leonard Raskin 7:08
right. Yeah.
Nestor Aparicio 7:09
So the Rutschman deal works out like this in the wrong way, and for the Red Sox, ending the Michaelias went to Yale and he’s smarter than everybody else, and Rubinstein’s got more money, you know, and they sat and talked about their asset resource. So they saved 30 million bucks, not a small thing. So I’ll just throw that out, right, right, right off the bat. You wouldn’t think that’s a small thing for any of your clients. No, and and
Leonard Raskin 7:34
from a protection standpoint, they they brought in on the trade good protection relative to what they had. I wouldn’t say it was a bad deal.
Nestor Aparicio 7:44
Okay. Well, for the future, right? Yes. Yes. So, and to your point, how much is it more the current when he’s on the DL and Besai was playing, right? Okay. So, the real thing is the labor war, and everyone preparing for it.
Leonard Raskin 8:00
Yes.
Nestor Aparicio 8:01
And me talking at length for weeks and weeks ahead of this, saying this isn’t a normal trade deadline. This is a trade deadline where upper upper management forget that ownership ownership ownership involved.
Leonard Raskin 8:16
Yes,
Nestor Aparicio 8:17
and they want to know. All right, good, better, best, worst, bad, nuclear on the other side, right? So if the work stoppage never exists and we get détente and the players roll over and we get the salary cap that we will die getting on the hill, we are getting a salary cap, and the reason for that, as I’ve learned, because I’ve had Evan Drellic on this week and Foster only on, I’ve really learned about this. The issue with the ownership is this, and I had Kurt Badenhausen on, and that’s a segment I want you to listen to personally, Leonard. That’s your homework before we get together on Monday, because I’ll I’ll deal. You and I will have a deal on that. Go listen to Kurt Badenhausen. Kurt Badenhausen is a little background. His for 30 years, 30 plus since 1989, for a long time, yeah, been the evaluator of franchise valuations. It’s his specialty. It’s the space he lives in for 30 years for Forbes. Now for Sportico, he left Forbes a couple years ago and is with Sportico, and he is the one every year that every when I was doing radio at the turn of the century, we would reference the Forbes. How much Art Modell’s yeah, sure, sure, absolutely,
Leonard Raskin 9:30
absolutely.
Nestor Aparicio 9:32
Baseball is completely out of whack, and I could bring up a chart for you, and I will, and I’ll send it over to you, and you can look at it and valuations times earnings. Like the WNBA is like 13, the NBA is like eight. You know, like valuation to sell my franchise. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Where Ted Leon’s sits in the NHL and NBA sphere, and where the last time I got together. With Baden House and I looked, it was two years ago, and we were arguing about whether the Ravens were worth five or 6 billion, but certainly just a
Leonard Raskin 10:08
billion amongst friends, five to
Nestor Aparicio 10:10
6 billion. Yep, we’ve gotten together two years later. It was June of 24. I had them on, got them on in August or really July of of 26, and with the with the Seahawks selling for 9.6 billion,
Leonard Raskin 10:26
yep, yep, the
Nestor Aparicio 10:27
Ravens are now worth eight to 9 billion. God bless you. Okay, so this where we’re getting into multiples here as to why Steve Bashati can take a guy like me and throw me out and have people like Chad Steele run the place, and Sashi Brown not answer to anybody, and have Baltimore County, which you’re a resident, I’m a resident, bent over to build new hot tubs for them for 25 million dollars on Baltimore County’s dime that’s coming out of my tax money, which pisses me off, especially when I don’t have access and they’re discriminating against me today, and I can’t go out and cover the team and ask the questions it should be asked on behalf of the people footing the bill. Now that being said, back to baseball. Yeah, the ownership part of this and Badenhausen and the multiples of what these teams are worth has really dramatically stagnated for baseball because of their media deal because they’re so old and white, and you and I don’t even go, and I’m not even white. And like the the fear and the risk and the you got to give Pete Alonso 30 million, you got to give players. It’s one thing giving Zay Flowers 40 million when you know that’s paid for from your TV contract. Right. The Ravens, Sashi Brown has the easiest job on Earth, and when you see him, tell him because they wake up every day printing money. Yeah, it’s
Leonard Raskin 11:46
just crazy. He’s
Nestor Aparicio 11:47
got a dumb job. I mean, like literally crazy. You don’t have to do anything. The Bengals make money. Everybody makes money. The Raiders have figured out how to make more money by bilking the people of Nevada. Literally, absolutely, and every tourist that comes in and buys a ticket, so you know Bashati wakes up in the in in that situation. Rubinstein and Araghetti have bought this thing that they can’t wield, they can’t make happen, they can’t get the city to bend over and build towers to them and give them the battery because they’ve already got the lease attached to this. They clearly don’t really know what they’re doing about baseball at all, and they’re going to throw Cal Ripken in front of this at some point. But this labor thing, for them and for the Red Sox, is at the crux of the deal. Which is, if they don’t play baseball next year at all, and there’s a lot of people predicting that. Yep, yep. There just are. If they don’t play at all, the Red Sox will get nothing out of Ruchman. He’ll become a free agent at the end of next year, having not played next year. And Elias can go to Rubenstein and Araghetti and keep his job. And there’s a lot of conjecture that they’re into him for a couple of million a year. I mean, forget it. Right? Matter doesn’t matter. Tyler Ward. I mean, Tyler O’Neill is making $18 million a year, 50 million. You know, doesn’t care. But the Elias thing is he is under a longer term contract. They are committed to him for two or three or four more years because when they gave him the new title last year, that would have come with a five year deal. Yeah, standard. But we we
Leonard Raskin 13:16
know that can be zapped out. That doesn’t matter.
Nestor Aparicio 13:19
Yeah. Well, it wasn’t John Harbaugh’s case, and he got even more money. Woke up with more, right? And Steve told him, “You’re gonna get more money. When he fired him on the phone, right. So after 18 years, so that’s the kind of people we’re talking about here, and how they asset management. So they don’t care about Adley Rutschman or you or your Birdland or Kevin Brown sea fees in the ninth inning the other night when he’s still apologizing for all this, but here’s where it is: the real asset management issue here is the labor stoppage, how long you think it might go, and how you’re managing your risks through this. And the Orioles, and I don’t think this is an Elias thing as much as this is an Araghetti thing, and not really a Rubenstein thing, but an Araghetti thing and a Cal Ripken thing, who’s been through all the wars for 50 years, and would say, you know what, man, I love Rutschman, and I’d love to have him here, but if you’re going to give me five kids as we get up on this labor stop, that’s right, and we’re going to wipe 30 million off the books in a year when we’ve been boujohn and we can’t win, and we and people are going to be pissed, and they’re going to be pissed, and we’re going to lose season tickets over this for how long? Freaking billionaires! You’re billionaires for how long? Right. We need to go win, and the only win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win, win, and all of that says we ain’t winning now. And Mike, you’re safe, and we didn’t win with them, and we can
Leonard Raskin 14:36
win with the others because it didn’t matter. Look, I I am under no, no false illusion that anybody that does not own their own company is not immediately replaceable by someone who does. I have never believed it. I would. You’ll never believe it. It’s a very simple process. Well,
Nestor Aparicio 15:03
12 years ago, my employees all got on the internet, and my wife was fighting for her life, and they were doing all sorts of awful things to me. And you said goodbye, predicting that this wouldn’t be here, and we just did 28 years. Although I haven’t upped the logo yet, we just did our 28, and I’m okay. And you manage my money, and I don’t have a lot of it. You said
Leonard Raskin 15:21
you said sorry. No. Yeah. That’s it. Look, I’ve I’ve I’ve had the horrible. And
Nestor Aparicio 15:27
I’ve been tapped on the shoulder on Christmas Eve and fired by phone too. I’ve had that happen too. Right. And I’ve been fired by clients. I get fired by clients a lot. Sure.
Leonard Raskin 15:35
Sure. That happens absolutely. I mean, it happens to me too. You know, they they decide to go elsewhere and and take their money with them. That happens. We’re all human. We all have emotion. All this happens. But I’m not losing my job. Nobody’s going to take away my livelihood. It doesn’t matter who they are, what they say. It’s not going to change the the long term trajectory. By the way, Chad Stevens,
Nestor Aparicio 15:59
Greg Bader, and these billionaires have tried to take away my livelihood.
Leonard Raskin 16:02
Correct.
Nestor Aparicio 16:03
That’s very clear. That’s right on the record.
Leonard Raskin 16:05
No, I get it. I get it. And and my thing is, when you’re a baseball player or a football, whatever, pro, an athlete, a pro athlete, and I don’t know how contracts work. I really don’t. I don’t want to. I don’t care. I’m a fan, and I understand money, but the bottom line is, when you sign a contract and you get paid a boatload of money upfront, guaranteed, whatever. Here’s what you know: that contract is as good as for as long as the owner wants to keep me. And some, very few, we know have what are called no trade clauses, right? So you can’t get rid of them without their permission. But we also know that it’s likely that if I’m the one they want to get rid of and it’s no trade, there’s somebody who’s going to take me that I’m going to want to go to.
Nestor Aparicio 16:57
You know what’s a great example of that? And I hold your thought. Yeah, yeah. I don’t be interruptive, but just go ahead. Adam Jones. I ran into him on the field three weeks ago in Philadelphia, right? Yeah, you said it was incredibly warm, and I had a nice, really nice chat with him. Yep. And um, and he’s he’s everybody knows he’s a good dude. Yeah, I don’t need to tell you that, right? Absolutely. But like, so we were talking about Spain and the World Cup and all that, and then I walked into the stadium and I walked up the steps and I thought to myself, “Oh my God, I just met him on the field in Philadelphia. That’s where he refused to go
Leonard Raskin 17:32
right
Nestor Aparicio 17:32
during the trade deadline because he was a five and 10 guy. Yeah, so five and 10 thing is part of this whole management labor war that goes back to Andy Messer Smith and Marvin Miller that I’ve lived through my and I’ve I’ve I know more about it than Katie Griggs by and David Rubenstein because I’ve lived it I’ve talked it on the other 30 I’ve lived through the 94 strike I’ve had to understand this which is why when I bring Kurt Badenhausen on when I bring Evan Drellic on who’s all over this for the Athletic that we’re trying to do this at a higher level because I really am here to educate people, and that should be my role in a way that Rob Long can’t educate you, in a way that Ed Norris can’t educate you, in a way that Kevin Brown can’t can’t and won’t educate you. That we’re about to get into the place where if you’re living in Schmigadoon, by the way, great show. Take your wife to see Schmigadoon. See Schmigadoon. It was great, but which is fantasy land? We’re not in fantasy land, you and me, as we go into this labor thing. So when this Ruchman thing happens, boo hoo! We love number 35. Give it back to Messina. Whatever it is, whatever your schtick is on the season or the wild card, these are billionaires making billionaire Bitcoin decisions that we see people like you and I try to explain to people.
Leonard Raskin 18:44
Look, it’s billionaires affecting millionaires, and if I’m going to be Bernie Sanders, right, I’ll be Bernie Sanders. Who cares? They don’t pay their fair share anyway. So, the the fact of the matter is that you work for somebody, and that somebody controls your paycheck, and that somebody, in almost all circumstances, can say you don’t get paid anymore, or you don’t work for me anymore. Now these these guaranteed contracts, of course, you get paid. You just don’t get paid by me, or you don’t get paid to be here anymore. Dude, the
Nestor Aparicio 19:17
last time I saw Bichat still get paid for a long time was the day that Cleveland gave that money to Deshaun Watson, and he was rummaging around the show in Florida, angry. It was the first thing he brought up at the gaggle I got locked out of by Chad Steele. It was a guaranteed contract. It was the guarantee. I’m a billionaire. We don’t guarantee football players money. And guess what? That’s not the way we do business in our business. What did they
Leonard Raskin 19:41
get? Four years, 140 million, and if I read or heard it right, 118 guaranteed. Is that right?
Nestor Aparicio 19:52
It’s getting more.
Leonard Raskin 19:53
Right. So he blows out his leg. God forbid. I don’t. You know. He blows out his leg. In on a play, and the next three years. Well, welcome to
Nestor Aparicio 20:05
welcome to mr. Rubenstein’s wrist with Kyle Bradish,
Leonard Raskin 20:08
right? But here’s the thing: who’s already
Nestor Aparicio 20:10
had it fall apart.
Leonard Raskin 20:11
But but there’s hopefully hopefully. So let’s go back now. They’re smart enough,
Nestor Aparicio 20:17
but that’s a real guaranteed contract. Yeah, yeah.
Leonard Raskin 20:19
But but they’re smart enough that when they sign it, the second thing they do, and I know you know this exists, is they get on the phone,
Nestor Aparicio 20:28
Lloyd’s in London.
Leonard Raskin 20:29
They call Lloyd’s, and they say we want to insure, and Lloyd’s says we’ll insure 7080, 90% of the contract, and they pay a premium, an insurance premium to an insurance company to hedge the risk, so that if something happens, doesn’t all come out of their pocket. It’s
Nestor Aparicio 20:50
Google Robert Ames and Peter G. Angelos and Albert Belle. Right. Google that. Right. And that was the you know the whole basis of what, at a point where Peter was bleeding money, yes, bleeding money. There’s no such thing as bleeding money for Steve Bashati. No, but Rubinstein and Araghetti-they’re very upside down in this investment. Well, he’s got plenty money. He’s got plenty money, and that’s a good thing because he came very upside down right now. He came here
Leonard Raskin 21:21
with plenty money, and he said, “I’m going to spend it. And he’s showing that he does. He just made a decision, or his team made a decision, that this guy wasn’t the one. And I get it. Look, they got back a hall of young kids if they’re good. Years from now, we’ll say it was one of the greatest trades ever, and if not, years from now, we’ll say Chris Davis went into the Hall of Fame, and and there you have it. What are you going to do? What I’m going to do, my my wife. What my wife says is they’ve given up. They’re not going to win another game. I’m not wasting a minute on them. And and then Tuesday night we watched them beat the Angels. Well, Luke and I
Nestor Aparicio 22:01
went an hour. Of course, they’re going to win the other side of all the deals, and at the end, I’m like, watch them play 541 ball, which is not over their heads given the pitching. It’s not crazy to think underheads you might figure this out and have a month or two that see Tampa Bay decent. They don’t need to play 90 under ball. They’re not 20 games under 500.
Leonard Raskin 22:20
No, and we could see Tampa, the Yankees, the Red Sox, and the Orioles for all in the playoffs, and and that could be the season.
Nestor Aparicio 22:29
Katie Griggs and Don Rovak will be on the phone with me saying, “I told you you’d be begging us for playoffs, right? And you and I will bet it down and wait till they’re 12 bucks, and we’ll go out because
Leonard Raskin 22:38
there won’t be anybody there. I hope we have that problem in October, brother. I hope when
Nestor Aparicio 22:42
you get back from Brazil, I hope we’re. By the way, Robbie Leonard, my favorite Democrat, yeah, yeah, called me and he’s taking me to the game Thursday. So I’m going to record him. He said, “You want to go down and see the carnage and sniff around? And I’m like, “Yeah, we’re gonna fade these crab cakes. We’re doing that Thursday. Leonard Raskin is here. He’s Raskin Global. He’s had a Fadley Crab Cake or five with me, indeed, as well. You find Matter asking Global. Last thing for you, yes, on the way out the door. Tell me what you do for a living.
Leonard Raskin 23:08
Yes, so so we we help people understand their money. We help people protect it. We help people grow it. We help people enjoy it, and and we make sure they transfer it to who they want. Here we’re talking about the protection side and the growth side. You got to believe the Orioles made a move, the Ravens made a move for the growth of their franchise, for the future of made an
Nestor Aparicio 23:31
investment

of their team. They made an investment, and from the Orioles standpoint, I know you say they’re printing the Ravens standpoint. I’m sorry, they’re printing money, but I’m also hopeful because I’m a businessman and I’m a financial advisor. First and foremost, you protect your wealth. The first thing you do always is protect your wealth because after something occurs, you can’t get the insurance you need to protect the investment. So hopefully, they picked up the phone. They said we’re going to sign Zay to a big deal, and oh by the way, we want to insure his legs, his arms, his back, whatever it is. And if something happens to him, we want you, the insurance company, to pay this claim, so we don’t have to pay the salary of a guy who’s not playing for us. We make sure you protect your cars, your home, your liability. If you become disabled, if you die too soon, all these things can cause havoc to you, your family. We make sure that that’s not the case before. You have to do all that before the the tragedy happens. We make sure that you’re protected properly, so you can then invest, grow, enjoy, and think about transferring your wealth. We help people do it. We’ve been helping people do it for almost 40 years now. January be 40 years doing this, and and we make sure people are in a position to have the American dream, to do the things they want, to be able to care about their family and and enjoy their family and have the experiences of going to an Oriole game, going to a Ravens game, or Disney World, or whatever that. Is for you that your kids are in the position you like, your family’s in the position you like. You get to do the things you want with your money because you’ve protected it. You’re growing it. Go out and enjoy it. America, greatest country in the history of the world, at the greatest time to be alive, and that’s what Molly. I thought that way in New York

Perfect. Perfect. Here, here’s what I want to do. I want you to not look it up because I did. Okay. Got it. It’s got a Saturday Night Live core to it. It is incredibly funny, incredibly entertaining. Got it. And I want to give love to Chip Namius, who was the one-time PR director, the Houston Oilers, who was my been my friend for 40 years. He’s been on the show talking Oilers stuff with me. Yeah. But he’s also Bon Vivan of entertainment, music, and stuff like that. And he he shares things on social. He shared a review that was so crazy six weeks ago that I’m like, I’m going to see Rush. I’m gonna try to see it. I got a $69 ticket. It’s gonna be more expensive than that. And I sat in the orchestra. I got it last minute. Walked in, did the whole thing. It was extraordinary. And I know you and your sense of humor and where you are and your show tune thing. Don’t Google it. Whatever you do, got it. Because it’s a Netflix TV show and all that. You can find a lot of stuff. Just buy a ticket for you and your wife. Do something romantic. Go do that and go see that show. You’re gonna love it. That’s all I’m gonna give you.
