Nestor Aparicio 00:01
Welcome home. We are W, N, S T am 1570 Towson, Baltimore. We call this ship Baltimore positive and positively into Super Bowl week around here, any cup of soup or bowl, I am out looking for more charities. If you know a charity, community organization wants come visit next week, or anytime in the future, have them throw me a note. Nestor, Baltimore positive.com it’s all presented by my friends at the Maryland lottery. I will have the candy cane cashes because I have them left over from the holidays. Still smell like peppermint. Smell like maybe some hot chocolate with peppermint. On a day we get a foot of snow around here this week, and dig it out. Everybody’s got a bad back around here. That’s why I need my friends at GBMC to keep me upright. I have my doctor’s appointment coming in March, and they’re putting us out on the road for the Maryland crab cake tour and a cup of soup or bowl for the Maryland Food Bank next week and local pantries. I tend to keep the things in the neighborhood. Monday, we start the party downtown at fayettely. Tuesday, we’re in Catonsville at El Guapo. Wednesday, we moved to Koco’s in Laravel. Thursday, will be at Pizza John’s in Essex, which probably means cheese steaks and french fries and gravy for me. And then on Friday, we’ll be at Costas, where I’m wearing my Costas shirt right now I’m wearing the shirt that only Pete has, really that sort of that peachy looking thing there, peach melba, but I’m probably just gonna have the crab Imperial that’ll be next Friday at Costas in Timonium. Usually, John Martin joins us, so when he does not, Seth Elkin joins us from the Maryland lottery. After the snow, we had a jackpot winner. We’ve had race track winner. But more than that, Seth, you’re, you’re a Pittsburgh guy, John’s Cleveland guy. Maybe he didn’t show up because he doesn’t have a coach yet, but I’m hoping for Jimmy Schwartz and talking about, you can’t go home again. Mike McCarthy, bat in it, in the stillers with the yens into that, and Danton and and we’ve got Jesse Minter and Harbaugh Jr, Jr. It’s been, it’s been a little bit of a whopper since the last time you and I got together for our football programs, right? Like, like
Seth Elkin 01:55
you said, we were going to have new coaches by the time we got together again. And so be it. There it is. Mike McCarthy, like you said, Pittsburgh guy. I think ultimately, people were a little nervous about this, so underwhelmed
Nestor Aparicio 02:07
about him. I mean, he’s like a grown up, he’s like a guy that worked has done this in two major like, how, how is that a bad hire? I don’t, I don’t, it’s not sexy, but it’s like, hometown. I don’t get it. I don’t know why people are upset. I really
Seth Elkin 02:21
don’t think by the time his press conference was over, people were a little bit reassured, because he he sounds like us, and he sounds like he belongs, because he does, and he is one of us. So that’s reassuring. The other thing it’s reassuring is that he’s a guy with a with an offensive mindset, and we’ve spent 20 years, the last two decades, with a defensive head coach, and Mike McCarthy plans to call the place so,
Nestor Aparicio 02:47
but he’s not a quarterback.
Seth Elkin 02:50
No, I would say no,
Nestor Aparicio 02:53
at some point you got to get that part of it right. But I mean, that’s the thing that sunk my buddy Tomlin. So, you know, I I can go back to hating the Steelers again because I don’t know the coach anymore.
Seth Elkin 03:03
I think we all have to wait and see what’s going to happen here. I think there are a lot of question marks, you know, for the for the third year in a row, we’re going into an offseason where we don’t know who our quarterback is going to be, which is a real question mark that, you know, yeah, you learn to value that everybody here in Baltimore, with Lamar Jackson, you learn to value the fact you know who your quarterback is going to be.
Nestor Aparicio 03:23
Well, if you listen to Mike Florio this week, we only think we know who our quarterback is. You don’t know who our quarterback is till he signed and says he still wants to be here. That you know that’s it’s been a wild couple of weeks, and I want to give you a little oxygen by the way, Seth Elkin communicates for the Maryland lottery, not just for friends of the Pittsburgh Steelers, or our home run riches program, which we’re going to be getting too soon, or, you know, ravens tickets for life, and all the fun things we do. But the football thing this week, when I think of gambling in America, the Super Bowl and gambling are sort of one in one a it was the one place in my neighborhood where pool cards went around. Bars took blocks for 25 bucks or 100 bucks, or whatever it was, the place where you smelled gambling every year in the sports vernacular. Now it’s, you know, come on, man, it’s all it’s on TV. It’s everywhere. I want to give you a little option to talk about what, what you all do there, because this is a time of year where people like run at I even said to my wife, I’m having a little withdrawal. I’m like, there’s only one more football game, not the Pro Bowl. There’s only one more football game. And I’m like, What are we going to do? I don’t even bet on it, but if you bet on it, it has a whole different last chance to bet on football this year. And I want to give you a little chance to talk about one 800 gambler everything you guys have done, because gambling bubbles up this week with all sorts of opportunities, right?
Seth Elkin 04:40
Yeah, there it is. This probably the single biggest day a one day event in sports betting. I saw one estimate the other day that the industry analysis, the industry estimate is that you’re looking at probably 1.7 billion. Dollars in wagers being placed on the Super Bowl across the country. So it’s a, it’s a very big day, although that’s legally or illegal, it’s legal.
Nestor Aparicio 05:10
That’s legally, right? Dude I see on my Facebook page. Every bar in town has a this and a that and a top five, because they’ve been doing it for 50 Years and like, and that has nothing that’s not even part of the number, right? So that’s crazy.
Seth Elkin 05:22
It’s so it is. It is a big day, but it also is one day on the calendar. And as you mentioned, you’ve got betting activity happening all the time. And on a on a wider scale, the month of February, just because of the Super Bowl, is usually not one of the bigger months, because there are not as many marquee events to bet on, but certainly we know how much activity there is going to be on the Super Bowl. And I think probably the main message for us to get across is that there are legal ways to bet on, on sports, and there are, unfortunately, there are illegal ways out there as well. So we want to make sure people know the legal channels that you can use. There are 12 mobile or online sports book operators that are licensed in Maryland, and you can find those if you go to MD gaming.com and go to our legal versus illegal online gaming page, and we have a list of the legal sports book operators. And then there are also 14 fantasy competition operators that you can use if you want to do a fantasy lineup on the Super Bowl.
Nestor Aparicio 06:32
Wow, I’m on this thing. Your sports wager versus licensed operators online fantasy competition, yeah. I mean, it’s one click away. MD gaming.com, if you want to learn about it. I like learning stuff here. But, I mean, I always say this to John as the executive director, and you communicate for the lottery, the whole thing about the lottery that it’s on the up and up, right like and that’s it’s you’re going to get paid it many cases, you know, right away, if you play lottery and you have, but I would say for people who have been wagering the last two, three years since this has come on, it’s become very ubiquitous, right? Like it is easy enough for you to do it on the up and up that finding shady ways to do it, it, I don’t, I don’t understand that part of it, but I think the whole part of it that comes on as a legal entity is the easiest way to do it in the way we’re encouraging people to get and I don’t have to be the guy that says, Put the games on, put ESPN, put anything on. Everybody’s encouraging you to bet. I think the biggest issue for me is know your limits and don’t take this thing further than you’ve ever taken it before. And I think it’s easier to do that, and that’s always my cautionary tale. For people I know that really enjoy it in the way that I’m I’m going to miss the game this week after next week. Miss the sport of football for eight months. I won’t miss the off season because we have a good time around. You’re talking about draft picks and whatnot. But as from a gambling perspective, there’s nothing to gamble on anymore, right? Like, so that’s, that’s, they take it away like eggnog with me at Christmas. Drives me crazy.
Seth Elkin 08:05
Certainly, we want people who decide to gamble on the game to do it responsibly. Do it, as you say, within their means, within their budget. Keep it something fun. Keep it something that’s a that’s a social activity, you know, that keeps it in that realm of being fun and not being something too serious, you know. And we also, of course, want people to if you are going to bet, to make sure you’re using the legal operators. Because one of the things, that’s of the many things that are required of the of the licensed operators, they all have to have tools available to you to help you limit your betting. Which an illegal operator, we have no way of requiring them to do that. So all of the legal operators have to have tools that allow you to set limits for yourself about how much activity, how many deposits, how many wagers you’re going to make. The threshold of the wagers that you’re going to make. An illegal operator is not going to have any of that in place. And apart from that you’re taking a big risk. If you’re gambling with any legal operator that’s that’s not licensed, they don’t answer to us, they don’t answer to law enforcement, they don’t answer to anybody. And so you don’t know what’s going to happen to your data. You don’t know if they’re taking the steps that we require of the licensed operators to protect your personal data, your payment data. You don’t know if you’re going to get paid. For sure, there are all kinds of reasons to stick with the legal operators. So we strongly encourage everyone search those out
Nestor Aparicio 09:30
right here. I’m going to read them off Bally bet sports book, bet 365 bet, MGM. Bet parks, my friends, up at the Green Man. Bet, rivers, Caesar. Sports book, crab sports, DraftKings, the score bet, fanatic sports, book vandal, and let’s bet. MD, so some of those, I’ve never heard of some of them, you know, like, literally, those are the dozen. So I just learned something here.
Seth Elkin 09:53
Seth, those are the ones, if you are are placing a bet on the Super Bowl. Those are the places that you should be.
Nestor Aparicio 10:00
Be Fair enough, fair enough.
Seth Elkin 10:02
And you’re taking a risk if you go outside of those. So we strongly encourage everyone to play responsibly if they’re going to play and stick with the licensed operators. We’re already taking
Nestor Aparicio 10:11
risks here on new head coaches with the Jesse Minter and Mike McCarthy and 10 other places. Seth Elkins, my pal, he is the corporate the communications specialist for what is your exact title? Director of what is it? Managing Director of Communications. Managing Director seeing. I want to make sure I get that right. Seth joins us. So from time to time, we talked about things all right. So from that perspective, one 800 gambler. I want to let everybody know it’s if you’re around, if you haven’t, they still have Super Bowl parties. Do people still get together on big screens and do all that neat dip and all that? And if they are, I hope they’re rooting for the Seahawks. And Mike McDonald. But how about the Belichick Hall of Fame thing? That was crazy, too. So Patriots are getting wham bam here a little bit. Let’s get on to lottery stuff, because I went to the front of the website and and we talked last week about the Olympics and new promotions. And I get hope we’re going to get to home run Richard soon. I hope I get to Sarasota soon. But the race tracks thing was, the thing that struck me is it’s a little bit of an obscure game. It’s a game I know about because I walk into CASAS and I see it, and the horses look realistic. When you go to CASAS and Timonium, they have realistic horses there as well as race track. But it kind of won, like 600 and 1000s, like a lot of money. And this is very unusual, right?
Seth Elkin 11:23
Yeah, it was, it was the largest race tracks win we’ve ever had. The winner came into claim anonymously, won at American Legion Post in Edgewater. And a very, very big win. It was a 12, I think I’m trying to remember the numbers 1210, eight, seven was his super fecta. So those high numbered horses are the long shot horses, and when you win on those, the payoff is big. And he had the bonus multiplier on the ticket as well, so he ended up with 660,000 so a really nice race tracks. When we were excited about that, we we get excited about about any kind of win that kind of crops up that’s a little unusual. That doesn’t happen all the time. And actually we had one of those just this week. In the January 27 drawing of cash for life, we had somebody who bought a ticket in montgomery county who won the second tier prize, which is $1,000 a week for life, or the cash option of a one time payment of $1 million and that ticket was sold at,
Nestor Aparicio 12:22
oh, man, I gotta do the math. How long would I have to live? That’s the first thing I’ve you know, I’m thinking like I’m doing the math on that. You take the million now, or you take 1000 a week, every week for the rest of your life, and try to eat super foods.
Seth Elkin 12:35
And somebody who bought their ticket at Meridian market in north bethesda is making that calculation as we speak, because the prize has not been claimed yet as you and I are talking.
Nestor Aparicio 12:45
So this is I got Leonard Raskin. I’m calling Raskin right now. I got him on the I’m gonna add him on a bad phone. I’m gonna ask him when I have him on this week.
Seth Elkin 12:52
It’s a big prize for cash for life, and we’re actually on the cusp of the end of that game. The cash for life game is is being retired. The last drawing is going to be February 21 so this person snuck this big win in just under the wire, and the cash for life will be going away, and we will be looking down the road at some other options to add. We’re not ready to reveal all the details of it yet, but we do have another game that will be coming later this year.
Nestor Aparicio 13:24
All of those games require me to say, Do I want a bunch of money now or a little bit every week forever? And you have to do the math, even if you hit one of the big bananas for like, 300 million, you’re going to be like, am I taking the cash pound, you know, and that that all involves attack. I mean, I hope to have that problem that I have to make decisions like this. I mean, if you just win 50 grand and you come down, John hands, you 50 grand, you come down, you take a picture, you go home, you pay your taxes, you don’t really think about but this whole way how long I’m gonna live versus how well I’m gonna live. That was part of the fun of cash for life for me, I’m gonna cool.
Seth Elkin 13:58
Thing is, the winner does have 182 days to get that figured out. You got 182 days to make the claim. So that’s plenty of time.
Nestor Aparicio 14:06
I’m making it right away. Dude, I went to a funeral early this week for a friend of mine. We lost too early. I’m making that. I’m getting my money tomorrow is what I’m doing. I’m not gonna spend it all, because I’m gonna be a little more responsible for that, but I’m, you know, I’m gonna do something nice for myself if I win. Everybody does that, right?
Seth Elkin 14:20
Well, we can’t, we can’t wait. We’re going to, we’re going to meet that person and tell their story. And it might be the last one of those big cash for life prizes, stories that we get to tell. So the end of the game coming up next
Nestor Aparicio 14:32
month, north bethesda. They’re probably commanders fans. Seth Elkin is here. He he communicates for the Maryland lottery. Remind everybody we’re doing our big thing next week. We call it a cup of soup or bowl. We have a bunch of community organizations coming out. I have some friends coming out and joining us five days in a row, all brought to you by the Maryland lottery. I will have the candy cane can these are $3 tickets. I had $100 winner at Costas. We always talk about this, like, get a $1 ticket. The jackpot, maybe 10 grand. You get a $2 it’s all. Waited. So this one’s like special. So come on out next week, bring us some canned goods. We’ll give you some soup, and we’ll have a good time next week. It’s all brought to you by the Maryland lottery and GBMC beautiful, some other promotions. I know you want to talk about some scratch offs, new things coming out. And you know me, I’m going to start beating you up about home run riches here soon, because we’re it’s almost baseball season. Or not in Pittsburgh, but here we’re
Seth Elkin 15:22
getting there. The tease I can give you on contestant of the game is it will be returning for the 2026, Oriole season, and it’ll have a slightly new twist to it. There’ll be a prize that we’re going to offer that we haven’t offered before. So we’re still putting the finishing touches on that. I can’t go into all the details yet, but that that home run riches fast play ticket will be back available in stores in in the early part of March, and you’ll be able to start buying those tickets and entering into the contestant of The Game promotion. And we’re looking forward to that we love, I love baseball season, and I love that that particular promotion, and something really special that we’re adding in the pricing of the Second Chance promotion this year that I think people are going to love. So that’s coming in another couple of weeks, we’ll be able to tell you more about that.
Nestor Aparicio 16:13
Well, I, you know, I love baseball season, but more than that, like you guys get creative with these things that we do. And really the neat part about home run riches is every night, Kevin Brown, whoever’s calling the game, reads a name out, and those names are up on the website. And inevitably, with 162 games, right? Like I know people who are part of this, and on that night, three home runs means a bunch of money for them. So I get into it as well. Last but not least, last week we did the Olympic part of this. And the Olympics are coming back, and I’m seeing commercials and all of that stuff going on promote that for me a little bit, because I know we talked about it last week, but we have a lady going to LA Right? Like people going to Milan. People are going all over the place, yeah.
Seth Elkin 16:57
Well, we had, we’ve done a couple. This is the second currently, now running is the second Olympics promotion we’ve done. We have three of our winners headed to Milan next week. That’s right, the February 5 through February 10.
Speaker 2 17:08
They’re going to be already, hard to believe. I don’t know where we’re all cops here too. I’m not ready.
Seth Elkin 17:14
Yeah, where January when it’s buried in snow at this point? But yeah, we got three of our winners headed to Milan, and then we’re going to send five winners to Los Angeles in 2028 we’ve already awarded the first one of those prizes, but you got your chance to be in on this. Any keynote ticket that you buy now through February 22 you can enter into my lottery rewards, and we’ll have you have a chance to be one of those winners. And we’re giving away five trips to Los Angeles, four of them remaining now at this point. And then merchandise packs Team USA. Merchandise packs full of red, white and blue gear that will serve you well as you cheer on Team USA in the Winter Olympics here coming up in February. So really excited about that. Kino is a game you know, people love, and particularly this time of year, it’s a it’s a good time to be indoors, sitting at a bar or restaurant somewhere, buy a keynote ticket and get something warm to eat and warm to drink and watch the Kino game unfold and see if you win. But even if you don’t, you can enter those tickets into my lottery rewards and have a chance to go someplace really warm Los Angeles in the middle of the summer for the Olympics in 2028 so a lot of fun with that. And I think our winners are going to have a great time with that. Los Angeles in the Olympics. It’s kind of a perfect setting. I’ve been
Nestor Aparicio 18:29
to LA you’ve been to Italy. I have never been to Italy, no. So, man, this is weird, but you know, the algorithm I’m starting to get ads serving me about food in Milan. I’m not making this up. And my wife’s been trying to take her dad to Italy for, like, he’s just turned 80. He’s very healthy, young 80. I’m like, take him to Italy. Go do it. So she’s been doing and I thought I was getting served her ads, because she’s like, doing this, like, I get served her cottage cheese ads, just because I say cottage cheese out loud to my phone and it starts serving me ads about cottage cheese, but the Milan thing’s Wow, because we had a flight 20 years ago to go to Milan to see Springsteen. My wife got sick and we couldn’t go. And then we had another flight to Milan, and my wife got cancer and we couldn’t go. And I still have never been to Italy. I’ve been a little Italy couple. I’m in Little Italy in Cleveland. I’ve been a little Italy here. So I’ve never been to Italy, so I am, I’m I’m jelly about going to Milan you this time of year. I hope they drink good coffee over there and get some pasta. The winners, okay, we’re gonna get pictures back from
Seth Elkin 19:30
these winners. Absolutely. I think they’re gonna have a great time. It’s an incredible trip and and a great example of the kinds of things you can win through my lottery rewards. We’re running second chance promotions all the time. Throughout the year, there’s never a time when we don’t have something available to enter. So go check that out@mdwateree.com
Nestor Aparicio 19:49
All right, it’s where I say Ariba there, chi or Ciao babies. What I’ll say Marilyn Ronnie’s put us on the road. Next week, we’ll be doing a cup of soup or bowl Monday at fadeleys. Tuesday, we’re going to be at El guapa. In Catonsville, cross street from state fair we did at State Fair before I get the pole that way. So I get to get my Latin heritage back with some chicken tortilla soup on Tuesday to warm up. Wednesday, we will be at Koco’s. I’ll have the cream of crab soup that day because it’s the best in the city. Thursday, we’re going to be over at Pizza John’s in Essex. I’m going to have the french fries and gravy. And then Friday, we will be at Costas in Timonium, I will have scratch off sniffy, scented, deliciously pepperminty, wintry candy cane cash and hopefully some lucky ones. We had $100 winner over Costas and Dundalk a couple months ago. Did I get everything in Seth, am I have I let anything out? I mean, by the time we get together, the next time, the Browns will even have a coach, right?
Seth Elkin 20:39
Maybe we’ll see. We’ll see what happens. See if they can lure somebody into that. You and I are
Nestor Aparicio 20:43
gonna have a good time at baseball season, because every fifth day you have a chance to win because you have a pitcher. We’re still waiting for that around here. He is Seth Elkin. He is my resident Pittsburgh friend and foe from time to time with Mike McCarthy. You know, it’s not going to be the same with that Tomlin and har ball, right? Like it really is. The end, I’m glad I went to the game a couple weeks ago in Pittsburgh, saw the ball sale, did all that stuff with the internet, because, like, it’ll never be the same again, right? It’s like, like, remember when the cowboys and Redskins kind of went away? You know what I mean?
Seth Elkin 21:12
I think yesterday, well, when, when McCarthy had his press conference, I think all of Pittsburgh started to comprehend the fact that we are really making a change here. It’s not something that we do very often.
Nestor Aparicio 21:23
It won’t be real to me till I see men are on the stage Thursday, right? As I mean it, it does feel like it’s, it’s been, you know, 20 years for we don’t know anything else, like today as we record. This is the 25th anniversary of Super Bowl, 35 with Brian Billick. How long does it feel like Brian Billick was the coach of the Ravens? How long does it feel that coward’s on TV every week? So you still feel him a little bit, but like it feels like a long time, it really does. So this is, this is fresh air, I think, for both cities, both franchises, both fan bases. And, you know, I can learn to dislike Mike McCarthy. He’s like all the rest of you up there, so we’ll have a good time with that new coaches in places. Baseball season around the corner. Luke will have any breaking news coming your way on the wnst tech service in regard to coordinators and coaches and all that kind of stuff. And if the Orioles, maybe they’ll trade with the pirates and get that young pitcher up there. Who knows? We have draft picks we can give I am Nestor. We are W NST am 1570 Towson, Baltimore, and we never stop talking baseball season and Baltimore positive. Stay with us. I’m going to Florida soon.
