It had been 13 long seasons since the Terps had faced the cross-town Hoyas and Joe Smith made sure that everyone in the area knew his name by the time this one was over at the Capital Centre. Smith had 26 points, nine rebounds and three steals but it was Duane Simpkins who hit the winning shot with three seconds remaining in overtime to left the Terps to a stunning 84-83 win on Black Friday to begin the hoops season and take a budding grudge match and local rivalry to a new level of animosity.
