Yes, Sorrento of Arbutus has a crab cake and it’s delicious

Everyone knows that if you’re going to have a crab cake on the menu in this town, you gotta make it great! Longtime Baltimore restauranteur Henry Pertman tells Nestor the legend of Sorrento of Arbutus and how a joint with pizza and cheesesteaks upped it game – and its crab cake – when new ownership took over six years ago. This is what the Maryland Crab Cake Tour is all about!

For the love of Sorrento of Arbutus and continuing the tasty tradition

When owner Harold Xeconimos took over Sorrento of Arbutus during 2020 and the lockdown period, he knew he wanted to elevate the menu yet keep all of its neighborhood glory and charm with the pizza and cheesesteak subs that always delivered. On his first visit to Arbutus on the Maryland Crab Cake Tour, Nestor gets the tale of another Dundalk native coming from Loafers on Route 40 and continuing the great tradition of the food and hospitality in Southwest Baltimore.

What took Nestor so long to get to Arbutus?

Our friend, sponsor and consigliere Bill Cole of Cole Roofing considers the Sorrento of Arbutus cheesesteak and crinkle cut fries a legitimate food group in his locally-based business so when Nestor got the invite to do the Maryland Crab Cake Tour near his Worldwide HQ in Southwest Baltimore, this one got tasty and spicy. But, shrimp on a cheesesteak? What’s going on over there…

It’s the people who elevate the neighborhood vibe at Koco’s Pub in Lauraville

We get the privilege of going all over town with our Maryland Crab Cake Tour but nothing takes it back to the old neighborhood like an afternoon at Koco’s Pub in Lauraville and doing the show between the kitchen and the bar with Marcella Knight, who has been celebrating 40 years of local business by making even more of her mother’s elevated and amazing crab cakes.

Hail, hail Halethorpe! A Honey of a spot to shoot pool, watch the game and taste fresh flavor

This stands as a warning to anyone who invites Nestor by their place for the Maryland Crab Cake Tour: you’re an invite and a taste away because he’s en route to meet more great local folks who want to promote their business. Owner Soo Mi Kang of Honey’s in Halethorpe invited us over and must’ve known that offering “Crabby Toast” would invoke the legend of Charles Markwood Eckman. Competitive billiards, great food and the game is always on at this old-school joint on the south side.

Now, this is the proper way to eat local “Maryland” catfish

This delicious artisan catfish sandwich won the Governor’s Award this summer and now Damye Hahn of Faidley’s Seafood in Lexington Market is ready to taste test Matt Gallagher of Goldseker Foundation and Nestor at Lexington Market on the Maryland Crab Cake Tour. An invasive Maryland catfish primer and a tasty new local dish are on the menu in Baltimore.

No. 1 TastyNes and 27th Anniversary Tour: Fenwick Bakery Peach Cake

Summer is gone and so is the fresh peach cake at Baltimore bakeries. You can never go wrong with the best part of July and August and this’ll make you long for the long-awaited return of this delicacy next year at Fenwick Bakery, where the peach cake is the closest thing we know to a little slice of warm heaven. See if it’s the best thing you’ve ever eaten! In the meantime, we’ve given you 26 other fantastic local treats to try before the trees ripen the local peaches.

No. 2 TastyNes and 27th Anniversary Tour: Ekiben Broccoli Tempura

Calling this amazing creation only the “second best” dish in the city is probably heresy but who knew that that a cruciferous vegetable could possibly be this delicious? Go ahead, get the broccoli tempura at any of the three Ekiben locations and tell us it’s not the best thing you’ve ever tasted! And, if you’re really hungry, make sure you get the Neighborhood Bird Bowl, too. Pick up some chopsticks on the way out. (You’re welcome…)

No. 3 TastyNes and 27th Anniversary Tour: Amicci’s Meatballs and Garlic Cheese Bread (aka “The SloppyNes”)

Everyone who has ever met Nestor knows that Amicci’s in Little Italy is his favorite restaurant on earth. And everyone knows about the world famous Pane Rotundo. But it’s time to share his favorite personal pairing – the meatball and ricotta marinara appetizer sliced and assembled across bubbling, toasty garlic cheese bread and served open faced. (This isn’t a real menu item. But if it was they’d call it “The SloppyNes” because this ain’t your father’s Sloppy Joe and it’s certainly no ordinary “meatball sub.”) Get a fork and a bib!

No. 5 on TastyNes Tour and WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary: Koco’s Pub “Koconut Shrimp” with Raspberry Jalapeno Sauce

You know about the crab cakes at Koco’s Pub in Lauravile. Let us tell you about the best coconut shrimp you’ve ever had in your life and why the sides are to be savored at all of our favorite restaurants where we get the same thing every time we go. Nestor also refused a private teaser reveal to Ricig and Marcella on the final four spots, so you’ll just have to follow along the TastyNes trail for deliciousness…

No. 11 on #TastyNes Tour & WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary: Pennsylvania Dutch Market and Mary’s Donuts Maple Bacon Glazed

It’s the kind of donut that makes you want another one – or three. If you love fried dough and want some tasty, tender, loving, Amish care in every light bite, come see this beautiful family operation one morning late in the week. Right on York Road in Hunt Valley. Pick the one you like because every choice is the right one at Mary’s Donuts in the Pennsylvania Dutch Market.

No. 12 on #TastyNes Tour & WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary: Chap’s Pit Beef

It was all ours in East Baltimore for decades before Guy Fieri and the food culture of America discovered this little pit beef shack secret in Armistead Gardens. The operation has moved a few hundred feet in recent years and looks – and tastes – better than ever. You knew this was high on this list. It was only a matter of where…and how, so let us show you.

No. 16 on #TastyNes Tour & WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary: Clavel Tacos

For most of our #TastyNes Tour, we’ve been featuring one special dish – our favorite craving item – on most menus at all of these local places we love. But for Day 16 on this journey, there are simply too many tasty tacos to only test one or two at this oasis in the center of Baltimore. When you go to Clavel, get ready to have the best tacos in town and a flavor you’ll savor.

Celebrating 40 years of crab cake love with nice people only (and Koco-nut Shrimp) at Koco’s Pub

The sign on the door says: ONLY NICE PEOPLE ALLOWED! And somehow Marcella Knight and the awesome folks at Koco’s Pub were still nice enough to allow us to celebrate their 40th Anniversary that required some #TastyNes Koconut Shrimp along on the Maryland Crab Cake Tour from the heart of Lauraville with tales of our favorite things to eat in Baltimore along with our favorite Ko-Host, sports cartoonist Ricig.

No. 17 on #TastyNes Tour & WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary: Icy Delights Egg Custard Snowball

We’re all big kids when we get to the front of the snowball line and need to decide on a flavor. When in doubt, always go with egg custard or skylight. And always go to Icy Delights. Trust me: we’ve tried ’em all! People in East Baltimore know. Dundalk born; now shared even on Sundays in various Baltimore County spots. Cool off! And do the marshmallow if you wanna…

No. 18 on #TastyNes Tour & WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary: Blue Moon Too Cap’N Crunch French Toast

We lived three blocks from Blue Moon Too in Federal Hill for over a decade and it was dangerous. It should be no shocker that the peanutty, crunchy, brunchy, fruity whipped deliciousness of this original concoction has brought foodies in from everywhere. But, yeah, it’s as decadently delightful as it ever was and worth the wait if you have to on Light Street. (Sometimes we even bring our own maple syrup!)

No. 20 on #TastyNes Tour and WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary Countdown: The Ugly Pie in Salisbury

Pie, oh my!!! Despite the Ugly name, the pies and pastries here are absolutely beautiful. Put a smile and some deliciousness in your pie hole by skipping the bypass on Route 50 in Salisbury and pick your favorite amongst an amazing assortment of fruits and savories – or try finding one in Ocean City. The Death By Coconut won’t kill ya! As a matter of fact, it’ll make ya feel more alive…

In search of that next great sandwich in life…and finding it on the road to Philly!

The next time you’re out having the best meal of the week or month or year, just remember it’s the icing on the cake to the good life when you find a new place or experience that is memorable. Our preacher of the American Dream, Leonard Raskin, joins Nestor in a search for that next best meal. Even if it’s a hoagie at the foot of the Delaware Memorial Bridge…

No. 24 on #TastyNes Tour and WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary Countdown: The Beaumont in Catonsville

Our 27th Anniversary #TastyNes Tour around town brought to you by Curio Wellness as part of our Maryland Crab Cake Tour takes us back to Catonsville and one of the tastiest special occasion treats we can find to splurge on and feel completely self-indulgent in buttery, velvety decadence. The fried lobster tail at The Beaumont is the “other” divine crustacean and is simply perfect in The ‘Ville.

No. 27 on #TastyNes Tour and WNST Baltimore 27th Anniversary Countdown: Philly Pretzel Factory

We begin our month-long journey in the celebration of tastiness and our 27th Anniversary with a stop in Bel Air for the smell of fresh pretzels in the oven. You don’t have to like Philadelphia to savor the brotherly love in a Philly Pretzel Factory pretzel. Hard to believe there could possibly be 26 things even tastier but you can follow along with the hashtag #TastyNes to find out all of our personal favorites, brought to you by Curio Wellness and our Maryland Crab Cake Tour stops with the Maryland Lottery and GBMC. On the road all month sharing our favorite foods to eat…

Putting our favorite celebrity chef in the Di Pasquale’s kitchen to talk foodie love

It’s almost inconceivable that through their long friendship that celebrity chef Nancy Longo of Pierpoint Restaurant has never been on the show but she finally joins Nestor at Di Pasquale’s in Canton on the Maryland Crab Cake Tour for an absolute primer education in Maryland cuisine and the importance of quality ingredients. Come smell what we’re cooking…

It’s time for Maryland to get that deliciously invasive catfish on the table

If you don’t know about the invasive catfish population eating all of the baby crabs and fish (and anything else) in the Chesapeake Bay, we’re here to educate you on why you’re seeing more of it in the market and on the table at local restaurants. Let Damye and Alicia at Faidley’s Seafood at Lexington Market tell you how we can eat our way to a better bay!

Damye Hahn Faidleys James Bond Living Classrooms Oyster
