Weโre doing the Maryland crabcake tour and my guest in this segment, Iโm wearing my Costas shirt to sort of beat him up a little bit because he has an F Costas crabcakes. But he can get them you can have them shipped you can have the famous crabcake ship. Weโre gonna be families this week for the Maryland crab cake tour on Friday with Dan Rogers gonna be talking about his amazing play that I caught last week on Baltimore, you have no idea Iโm checking out the will Schwartz who was my producer on my TV show back in the 90s. I was gonna be joining us weโre gonna be fade these on Friday morning, Roslyn for the lottery is going to be there with the holidays scratch offs for us. And then next Thursday. It is a special rockโnโroll occasion. On the 15th It is my 31st anniversary Baltimore radio, weโre going to be joined by the great genius shock Rock and Roll Hall of Famer from the Go Goโs, and all my rock and roll buddies. Iโm inviting everyone. If you donโt come it just means you donโt love me. And also means you wonโt get Maryland lottery tickets or have for first cracking like Goodwill and window nation tchotchkes as well. But weโre gonna be doing that on the 15th in the afternoon at cost. Itโs the last time I saw this guy. His kids were like little kids and we were eating crab cakes. Back in the corner at Costas and Don dog. Mike Flynn joins us now hereโs the main event. He of course was the center for that. That Super Bowl team we all forgot about back in 2000 because it was so long ago.
01:22
Hey, itโs funny that you mentioned GE to shock the drummer from the Go Goโs so Iโm sure you saw the documentary about that group crack did of course phenomenal. How you know, a woman a woman rock band right back then was like blew your mind. Right?
01:40
You know, believe it or not, they could play the guitar play that guy do drugs you know, itโd be like but people were shocked by right did you see that part where they go over to Europe and they were yelling at them they were dealing and they just like just fought back and it was amazing documentary but reason why I bring this up. She started talking about like hope. Where do I know that accident good old Baltimore baby. Iโve even know that you know, maybe like I didnโt know much about the Go Goโs other than that. Itโs like, watching it with Mary and it
02:12
was like
02:14
oh, she was a badass though. That is exactly what John Allen said John Allison my best friends in the whole world. He of course was the drummer childโs play. Singing now at Charm City devils in SR 71. And his band stone horses. John came over and chatted our life for friends. I mean, we were locker mates in seventh grade and Oliver Middle School, just these one of my oldest friends in the world. He was Rockstar, right? And he came out he wanted to be a part of because he had never met her and he and I were out drinking wine one night being you know, we go to concerts together. We heโs one of my buddies. You know, in the real world. I donโt have a lot of those. But heโs one of them. And heโs like, Oh, my God, sheโs so Dundalk. We gotta we gotta know her. Oh my god, like oozing. So she came two months ago she was in town. I had never met her sheโs on my bucket list. By the way. You know, Iโve never met John Waters. Iโve never had John like he is I speak having you on itโs even better when I have Matt Burke on you know.
03:07
Of course itโs better. But listen, Iโm no John Waters. I donโt like. I mean, I may not be the bottom of the ground. But John Waters, I guess. I had always wanted to have her on. She was like totally on my bucket list. The Bucket List showed up on my timeline. Itโs 630. In the morning, she was over at the bay. She had a book, she was the photographer in the band and the videographer. So all throwing up acts, thatโs all her word.
03:34
So sheโs got the book and we didnโt even get a chance to like she showed up at drugs sitting in Dundalk. On the day I was to be serendipity, man, like she was in town. I was doing a show in Dundalk. Her family still lit like she came over. And we like she had to leave because she was doing a book signing and she did not want to leave. Sheโs like, well, Iโm coming back for the holidays. We gotta get crab. So weโre doing this thing to honor Gina shock to really sit and talk to her because we didnโt scratch the surface of about 20 minutes A Conversation. She knows the hell of it. Like you see the duck with hell of a story. I mean, obviously, I mean, you could sit with her for 10 hours and really say to yourself, Oh, we didnโt get it. We need more time. You know, but I just love it though. Because my thought was this right? Playing down there so long that accent and like most people were like, oh, where she from? Whatโs like
04:22
your mother?
04:24
Whatโs that? Your parents had a weird accent? You will you probably think my parents had an accent. Iโm like, No, youโre you got it. But it is like very distinctive. It was like oh, sheโs from but before you got her background knew right away where sheโs from. But yeah, it was just funny. Thatโs awesome. I mean, I would love to listen to her talk. Iโm sure sheโs got some great stories thatโll be tough to come to cost us and just eat the crab cakes. Alright Flinter letโs catch up here you know it almost austerity the football team backup quarterbacks winning. AFC north. I mean, these games look like the easy games on the schedule when they came out back in the beginning of the year.
05:00
I mean, the ravens are in a really precarious situation right now and the defense hasnโt been great. Theyโre gonna lose queen for a little bit here. Itโs this. This doesnโt feel like what I see when I watched the Bengals and the Chiefs play. And the bills play right now, letโs say, Oh, I know what that looks like, that looks like quality. What the Ravens look like his loss potential to some degree right now. Yeah, you know, I think theyโve struggling offensively. Right? I mean, you canโt score 10 points. I mean, since the bye week. They really struggled offensively now. You know, it was okay at first right? Steel are struggling, you know, brown struggling and for, you know, up until probably about the last what, two or three weeks really the Bengals were an average team at best, right. A lot of receiver coming back changes everything for them. Right. Yeah. You know, they were injured. So they werenโt playing well. But now you see over the last couple of weeks, what level they are. And certainly the chiefs and the bills are at the top and even the bills for a little bit. Right? Weโre struggling because, you know, whatever was Josh Allen was good in moments. But he was struggling, right making some bad decisions. But you know, what they if they can, you know, win the division, which is a big question, Mark, at this point, you know, the how good Cincinnati is playing, but, you know, the AFC besides Kansas City in the bills, I still think is open. Itโs open to at least make a run. But, you know, with Lamar being out, and the situation whether you love him or hate him, and Iโm sure like to me, I donโt get it. You know, every quarterback has flaws, but heโs a special player. And my argument with quarterbacks like fine, you donโt want to pay him 280 million? Well, whatโs the alternative? You know, thatโs always the question you need to ask yourself as a fan or an organization. But without him, yeah, they have potential to struggle here over the next couple of weeks. And if you look at that playoff picture, you know, you bump out of the division league boom, youโre in a dogfight with the chargers and the Patriots and you know, just trying to get in the playoffs. So, you know, theyโre struggling offensively, thatโd be a bigger concern for me. Then the other defense by the little score a lot of points, itโs hard to win in the NFL field score points. chart for you. You said you donโt get it. What donโt you get in that regard to the Lamar thing?
07:14
What I listen, Iโm not naive, or what player he is, like, I look at Lamar Jackson. Yeah, you need to be more consistent from the pocket of the playoff atmosphere to win a Super Bowl. But my thought is, heโs a phenomenal player, youโre gonna win with him. Okay? If there are people, you donโt want to pay him or donโt think heโs worth what heโs asking for? I always thought, well, whatโs the alternative to the NFL world? You know, itโs, itโs, you know, itโs very hard to like in the NBA, itโs very defined, right? You either have or had not, if you have the guys, you got to try to win. If not, youโll just try to tank. I donโt know if that works in football to just necessarily just go and tank, right, because of, you know, fan bases and putting butts in the seats and lay itโs just hard to do. And plus, itโs hard because thereโs a lot of moving parts and a football team. So if Lamar Jackson would go somewhere else, you look for alternative, a quarterback like whatโs the guy? You know, look at the year, you know, you had Matt Jones come out, and it was Zach Wilson and Trey Lance. And thereโs a couple other guys, right that that would be considered a good class, because of the number of guys drafted the first I mean, how many playoff games those guys want? But would you want those guys like, you know, like youโre locked into? Whatโs your future with those guys? And you look at the years before, itโs just very hard to find that guy. And I would say, you know, having a guy Lamar Jackson, and for us, weโre years from now, Flynn and 52 million a year guarantee. Is he that guy three years from now, at 52 million a year at 28. Is he still that guy? Because you got
08:48
to be that guy for five years? I think youโd be that guy in three years barring injury. Now you start getting the other side of 30 year but that itโs itโs a little different conversation. And you know, itโs funny, because the one thing I do is I you know, unfortunately appear and you know, I mean you donโt need to deal with that because if youโre donโt go to a game, right, the local game is the rape So men are whatโs on theyโre gonna put the Ravens on Well, in Boston, itโs New England. So I was forced to get you know, the NFL package so we watched a lot of the games and my son now has become a diehard Ravens fan and will watch the game he gets very upset when he watches the game and itโs always like, Why is he running more? Why does he do this? You know, so you could I mean, I noticed thereโs a kind of just effort to make more plays you know from the pocket
09:33
you know, making those decisions and I saw you know, your watch some couple those games they last like down the stretch, he did play as well. But you know, I just donโt know, whatโs your alternative? I know money is a factor but itโs cat money. Okay, letโs you know, you need to invest in a guy that if three years doesnโt work out, the Ravens do as good as anybody is cutting bait with guys and eventually turning things around with it a year or two but, you know, two, I think he could be that guy sir.
10:00
Three years from now, four or five years from now? Yeah, I mean, certainly, you know, when you rely on your legs and your running, power read and read options and rollouts, and you run into quarterbacks, certainly, but thatโs thatโs a running back, right? Thatโs a receiver.
10:13
And certainly, we receivers are built and how Iโm sorry, quarterbacks are built, you open yourself up to some hits that, you know, running backs donโt necessarily how theyโre built and how they run. But yeah, I still think you could be that guy. And I still think they could win now. You know, itโs gonna be tough to beat Kansas City and buffalo just because of the quality of talent. They have the quality of those quarterbacks, but itโs possible. I mean, it is, but you wonโt do it without Lamar Jackson. I think if I right, this week, my columnists, as I start to get ideas from talking to people like you that are way smarter than me. You know, one of the reasons they threw me out if they donโt like my questions, right. And one of my base questions is no one else wanted to draft this guy. Because running into linebackers, 140 to 220 times a year is not a great idea, ever. Itโs not a great idea, when you lose running backs and preseason games in Washington a year and a half ago, right? That that youโre going to take on that kind of contact in that significant kind of way, year after year, like a running back and think that youโre going to beat youโre gonna get the best version of that person in December. Flint, I donโt need to tell you, man, I remember your body getting beaten up in those years. And I remember how 30 felt different than 24 for you. And you know, like, seeing this now the third year, right? So three years ago, thanks slow down in the middle of the year for him. The COVID thing happened for him. Apparently unvaccinated last year in real injury took him out the rest of the year. And Iโll tell you what, I hardball is just a terrible liar. But he came out to the press conference on Monday and I watched him on video. He looked ashen. He looked like they werenโt eight and four. They werenโt first place. They didnโt win on Sunday. It looked like a lot more concern than Oh, Lamar is not going to play this week. But heโll be okay next week. I donโt believe that. And I donโt and I think itโs really hard to project this when youโre in the draft room. And youโre saying we love the kid. We love the athlete. We love the person. We love the we love the style. We love zigging and zagging and weโre gonna play a different style, weโre gonna draft around that and weโre gonna be able to get cheaper players and build our defense and like all of that, right. Iโll hear all of that smart. I write books on that stuff. But at the end of the day, running in the linebackers, 12 to 20 times A game every game stacked up into week 1012 1416 And then having to go win games just time a year. Theyโre all for three right now. He hasnโt really been healthy. At this point, Thanksgiving time into the holidays weather changing. He doesnโt like the cold. I mean, itโs really he looks like a guy that doesnโt like he looks like me. I donโt like the cold either.
12:51
So thereโs all of this and that this is what would concern me and not I love the kid he wins a lot of games. Itโs great kid, Kennyโs the guinea really BLP at Christmas time ever playing this style of football?
13:04
Well, I donโt know if they run it as much as the habit a pass. But you know, to himself when they get in trouble. It is when they get behind in the third quarter. Heโs running. Thatโs what heโs doing. Yes, Football is a game of attrition. Okay, and as I step back over the last 15 years watching it as a fad or analysts as opposed to play get it, I realize the what kind of game this is right. And positional players constantly are missing games, right? They get beat up. And how do you get yourself ready to go come playoff time, because thereโs an expectation in football, unlike some other sports where maybe during the week, practice wise, but in terms of missing games, thereโs no maintenance stage, right? Weโre not saving yourself for a couple of weeks. For now. Weโre the playoffs guys just play. So the quarterback position is build, right?
13:56
How he runs, you know, in a way there, you know, some of the set pieces, but heโs running in space, right? He can dictate a little bit how he gets it. But still, like theyโre gonna catch it. They always do. NFL guys are going to catch you at some point. And the style that they implemented a few years ago, right? kind of came from college. Itโs funny how, you know, to me, I think like innovation comes like to degree from high school, to college and into the pro game. Okay? Because, you know, the high school and college level, right, youโre dealing with, oh, I have these certain players, right? I need to make a system to fit and work with them. Right. And eventually a lot of these systems get up to the cop the professional game because itโs a little bit more conservative, right? Theyโre just well, this is the way weโve always kind of done it. So it was Wildcat for one year a couple years. Remember when the dolphins broke that out and then
14:52
you know with the RPO game now whatโs that Tim Tim Tebow to agree RPO game the power read stuff, but eventually right then itโs like
15:00
Okay, this is our standard. This is those college guys now that ran that are in the pros. Well defensive coordinators drop, adjust. And the biggest thing is
15:09
when you run these arpeggios and you run read options with the quarterback, okay? While youโre in high school college, you know, youโre running against guys that maybe arenโt as talented athletically, and arenโt as smart right? Now you get to the pro game. And these guys are high end athletes as good as there is. And theyโre smart as hell, right? So youโre playing scheme. So when they go into the game, theyโre not going to constantly like, oh, thereโs a dive, Iโm gonna go fall for the dive, or would they run an RPO, you know, the backside running back on the safeties not covered up trying to make a play on the running back, because they know your responsibilities conference, right. So all these things get squeezed, and they get better at it. And thatโs what they are, theyโre better. I mean, theyโre still effective, donโt get me wrong, but they get better at it. So, you know, eventually, it goes back to, you need to be able to drop back and deliver the ball from the pocket to it in the playoffs. And Iโll always in the professional level, I just, Iโll never go away from that. Because you have to, you need to be able to throw consistently from the pocket. And he can, but itโs not consistent. But in terms of the skill position around him to, then thereโs the open, right, because, you know, you watch a lot of these games.
16:20
And Xโs and Oโs are great. And I think also, you could scheme up more like because I coach high school football now, right. And if you have a guy here, or like youโre playing a better team or a card, you can skim up and win some games that way and pat yourself on the back and say youโre the best. But at the pro level, you know, a lot of it is all right there, man. Theyโre bringing six, somebodyโs got to win. Itโs simple, somebodyโs got to win. You donโt feel like you need to beat your guy and a story. You donโt have to be upfront offensive line, you got a man up, we could slide this way we can help you with a tight end, we can help with a back, we can quit throw, but at the end of the day, you need to man up you need to block Aaron Donald 15 times that game or weโre going to lose, you know, like at the professional level, it becomes a little bit clearer like that.
17:08
But I just think, you know, like with your quarterback too, right? That style is awesome. Itโs winning football, in terms of how they use the quarterback. And Greg Roman uses the quarterback. But itโs inevitable, right? Everybody gets hurt. And the difference between your running back going out your right tackle going out, even your best receiver going out. Right? It seems like the train just keeps moving. Iโve lived it, Iโve seen it. It just moves on. But when the quarterback goes out, everything changes. Because the system is built around change the widespread changes the pointspread like I wouldnโt change the pointspread but if you had a guy that ever played at center, right guard, like Yeah, it could affect the game minorly. But it changes points, right? Itโs Heโs the face of the franchise. So yeah, itโs itโs, you know, itโs itโs a risk, I guess to to invest in a guy that maybe plays that style. But heโs a dynamic guy. And he can win it. But the structure right now, when heโs had the moments to play well, whether itโs the team, whether itโs a system, the players around him that havenโt been able to do it. And now that heโs up for a contract, like any player, I donโt care how good you are. When Brady was here, whoโs arguably the greatest team winner of all time, right? Thereโs a lot of great quarterbacks, heโs one of the best, if not the best, but when he would be up for a contract here, the question is like, Oh, can you play with these later? Do you beat him? If he takes up this amount of money? Peyton Manning was the same thing. If he takes up this much of the salary cap, how can we build around so it doesnโt matter who you are, when when money and contracts, thereโs going to be debate if a guy is worth it, you know, but being hurt is would be my biggest concern. And you know, I just donโt know what your alternative would be. Because I think Baltimore fans, they have been a successful franchise you know, as much as you want to tear him apart and Chris thatโs fair. I mean, thereโs nothing wrong with that that sports but they are a successful franchise that if you donโt have Lamar Jackson, whatโs the next play? You know, what where do you go from there? And weโre seeing that this week with the Steelers after Roethlisberger, right we you know we didnโt have the hangover after Joe right like literally entering your air oh my god every year youโre stepping into spring and meeting your new quarterback thatโs yeah, thatโs that was your experience in the National Football League was just my quarterback and you know, in for us like we had such a great defense. And honestly, if you look back to itโs a really good tight ends and running backs to right, so we could run the ball. We were physical groups, so we kind of figured it out. But youโre right. It was always like whoโs the next guy you know, then Joe Flacco came in solidified the position and
20:00
You kind of got that wrote a very good football right you want a Super Bowl and then you got Lamar Jackson after which is very rare. There are some franchises that lose the guy and never find him you know and to be
20:13
Miami jets says
20:17
hey dude, I was gonna ask you you know that is a good time to interject Mike Flynn is here he is of course the main event you can follow him out on on Twitter sometimes even though sports radio when heโs not having his actor child in New York and coaching football and being a parent of rambunctious young men. Heโs got your get your own basketball team. Theyโre the Patriots and how have they taken it up there that theyโre suddenly you know, normal? They theyโre in the phone booth now theyโre not Superman. Not good.
20:46
Itโs like that good. Iโm reveling in it though.
20:50
Like I enjoy it. Youโre like, oh, you know what, every year they get lucky bounces right?
20:57
The you know, you post hurray back Joe does it a bad is that a bad quarterback? So but, you know, they they have a couple guys, you know Bill Belichick and thatโs the first checks that is over most of the time, and itโs hard, right? Like, nobody can deny that. Bill Belichick has a good quarterback, quarterback. Sorry, coach. I wouldnโt I mean, you donโt win as much as you do as a head coach as a coordinator and not be a good coach. And you can make a case heโs one of the better ones of all time is he as innovative of like as like a bill Walsh or like,
21:30
like Don Coriell the Chargers you know, or like
21:35
Iโm trying to think who was like maybe Dick Lobos some of these guys that reinvented like, a three four defense. But but he changed game plans every week because in terms of just being a good coach and a grinder and a winter and a detention detail, itโs really hard to compare but with that said, even guys like that could get criticized right he you know, you mentioned the the guys around Lamar Jackson. And I know that Greg Roman has taken a lot of heat. The last few weeks around there are so coaches around him, right? Well, you know, Bill Belichick hires, basically two guys to run the offense who have never coached offense, never coached the quarterback position, which I find
22:20
one of the most fascinating things Iโve ever heard of like, I donโt even understand that. Like, itโs almost like hiring Jeff Saturday to be a head coach, right? Heโs got St. Paul is worse. I think this is what I said. Hereโs why. Because if I was the coach of the Baltimore Ravens today, okay, they hired me which Iโm gonna put my hat in the ring
22:40
to bring me back because I have a better high school record that Jeff Saturday, did it actually call the old place. So I think you know, if anything happens, I need an intern, intern guy. Iโm gonna apply for people person. I mean, Iโll give you a Yeah. But Iโve been a head coach, right? If you have like a bunch of good coordinators, you give a team speech, you motivate the guys, you get structure, okay? But to actually be the guy thatโs in the room, and youโre like, oh, cover to weโre gonna do this man. You know, they bring the safety Hey, this is a look, they tilt this audit on and on. Okay, you have all that, then you need to interact with the quarterback in a quarterback room. Which, if youโre not a quarterback guy, a room guy, itโs a different room. You donโt mean itโs three guys. Theyโre like, kink tight in there. Itโs like a total heat. You know, you canโt be a special teams guy or Alive guy that go in there. And take that attitude in with quarterbacks. Theyโre gonna look at you like, Whoโs this Dianna thought? Listen to this boob? You donโt I mean, so you have that. And then oh, by the way, in real time, and an NFL game to call games. And to adjust that halftime adjust in game. Like, Iโve come to appreciation of the real good ones, how smart they are. You donโt I mean, like when you see it, itโs itโs something very impressive. So to be to hire guy that doesnโt have any experience. It just boggles my mind. If I donโt even understand it, how you could do that. How can you even I donโt care what you know about football. You know what I mean? Like, thatโs hard to do. Thatโs what theyโve done. And thereโs still six and six. But thatโs kind of what theyโve done. Theyโve basically hired you and I Well, thatโs not me, you. Theyโve hired me to like be a defensive coordinator. Like with zero experience that, you know, I know, some football, but yeah, so thatโs kind of where theyโre at. So thatโs the first time that you know, there have been questions like, you know, the old classic, right when you get old, right? Why is it when you get older, it was like, he lost his fastball. He lost the you know, Iโm getting that now. You know, he lost it. The interesting part for you because you are Jeff Saturday, at this point in your life, kids, you know, theater, like games, all that stuff. I would think for a guy like you and I talked to Stokely about this last week to get stuck. Heโs the son of a coach like all that maybe would have some qualification to step in there and do that. And I just think of it from the coaching standpoint of like a guy like you would say
25:00
I coach a lot of football thatโs a big job like I donโt I donโt know if I want to go have that life of being in
25:08
like the money it would be like I donโt know what heโs not getting paid like these top 10 guys but you donโt get paid 100 grand to coach the Colts I donโt care who you are I donโt care when I got a dope you all right you got so besides the money part of it you sit there like
25:24
cut a good coach in high school football right? Yesterday last night. Third and fourth grade hoops Iโm the Head Coach teaching the kids defense no pressure I love it you donโt have to be but to go with that environment now weโre youโre gonna get guys guys like you for example, just media guys. I donโt they ask the questions.
25:44
I donโt want him in here anymore. Throw them out and Iโm throwing out your questions. Now you can you get these guys. But guys like you asking those hard questions like why do you suck? Why did you call this? Like? I donโt know if I want that. How about this? James Brochet wind up throwing the past into the endzone when youโre in field goal range of a six point game at home. Oh, thatโs a good question. Well, and our ball didnโt have any answer. By Monday was the answer. Yeah, Harbaugh said it was just a bad play. There was no answer. Itโs like what Saturday screwed up the timeout. There are questions that you asked the rest of the OT answer is I messed up, and itโs okay. Right. But you know, coaches canโt admit that. Because if you admit that then right. Itโs kind of like a weakness. Whatโs whatโs Iโm trying to think of like, Oh, I know what itโs like like a like a like a Jenga game right? You pull one little block and it starts to wiggle a little bit then eventually another one comes right or a deck of cards you build those like, House of Cards right? You canโt admit that there was a mistake because boom you donโt I mean that itโs kind of all fall apart. But yeah, there are mistakes, you know what I mean? But yeah, to get to be like just Saturday to kind of like coach high school football and love in life to now deal with the slings and arrows from the media the smartass reporters I want to make you look bad itโs tough. Oh yeah, thatโs what weโre here for to make you look bad this year. Come on, man. You donโt me better now. Youโre gonna know that New England. Itโs always an intention to make somebody look bad. Thatโs a thatโs your attention. But you know, when you ask the right questions that could I seek to understand is what I seek to do. Mike Flynn is here so I seek to understand give me an update on your boy and Broadway and give Baltimore a Main Event update for everyone knows what youโre up to. No, just in Boston. My wifeโs teaching and coaching.
27:35
Coaching football, high school run football camps. My sonโs back. Now he got he made his last run there with Mrs. Doubtfire, which is on Broadway. And now heโs actually heโs cool with the high school. Real high school real kid. Oh, the work for him being a saint first. was tough. He struggled with it. Like because up until you know from basically from nine until 15 everything basically was on his time. And he was a good kid. Donโt give her a good kid. Good student like he did well, but it was tutors and a school with like, 20 kids in it. You know what I mean? Like,
28:14
literally, right? Yeah. But you know, like if he you know when he was like, Iโm tired today. I had a late night. Hey, Jake, donโt worry about it. You can do your test on Wednesday. You know donโt worry about it. You know when you go to school now, right? You got six periods a day. Itโs history to chemistry to Baba Baba on and on. And he was dead. He made his head was ready to explode. Itโs like Dude, thatโs what we call real life my friend. You donโt need Ico not all learning scripts. Itโs not all already scripts pumping out, you know, walking around New York City. You know what I mean? Having a coffee in the morning, Graciela read, you know, read in the building Legos. Like, you know what, and this is only school, wait to get to be my age. And itโs you know, so it was like a huge adjustment. Because like that I have a test on Thursday. I got a lot of other stuff, too. I donโt know if I can study for it. I said, well, the test is on Thursday, you need to make time. So for for him being like a normal, well adjusted human being itโs like been the best thing for him. And you know what? Heโs adjusted, which is awesome to see. And heโs got like a social circle. Like, hereโs a guy that was like, you know, I love Jake and youโve met him. Heโs very mature for his age. But, you know, your best friends canโt be 32 year old dancer and a 54 year old Tony Award winner. And like, you know, your six year old brother like, that doesnโt fly the salsa world of a high school sophomore, right? Like, you need to have some like, interaction you know, to be like have kids of your own age that have the same interests and stuff like that. So itโs been apparent you I mean, I really do, because I remember when the biggest decision was, you know, whether weโre gonna get the hot sauce or the really hot sauce on the wings. Oh, I missed
30:00
So oh my god, I remember those days I kill for that when I would Well hey, you know, what? Do I just want to get a crab cake today? Or I want to get the crab cake with the soup, you know, because I love like the the creamy whites or do I want to get crap, so I gotta break but those were the days you know, or I want that I want to go do I have a mixture and go and have like beer, itโd be now itโs like nothingโs good anymore. Nothingโs easy. I mean, as a parent, right and most people could admit this. They wonโt admit it to people because everybodyโs worried people, they people say, but some of these days you wake up like, oh my god, itโs the best thing thatโs ever happened me. And other days youโre like, Oh, my God, so much.
30:39
Yeah.
30:41
You know what I mean? But the days, but when you have the days where you just get up, youโre like, Man, this is awesome. Like, itโs better than any of the worst days and some of the best things Iโve ever done. You know what I mean? So it is what it is, you know, I got four boys. I mean, theyโre hard, but theyโre easy to because theyโre stupid. And they wear their heart on their sleeve. And you know, when theyโre mad, theyโre mad when theyโre happy. Theyโre happy. Itโs kind of simple that way, you know, people tell me Iโve always wanted a girl but they said, thereโs a little more to it right? Little more by you. Because Iโve seen it. Iโve seen boys and Iโve seen my neighbors have girls the same age. And like females, they must look at us and just be like, What is wrong with us? Hey, like, caveman? Oh, like it but it started early. But when you itโs your only world that youโre like, you know, you donโt understand it. But now I get it. Thereโs so much more intelligent and thoughtful. And theyโre smart. You know, that I realized now Whoa, you know, weโre just you know, so I would appreciate that around the house. mature faster than boys remember ways to say that to us? No, but itโs true. I get it. Why do you go to bed? But Iโm still not mature. Iโm 48. So like, Yes, but
31:52
But yeah, itโs great. I mean, I enjoy it coach, the kids that kind of stuff. You know, what else could you ask for? How you turned out so your parents so well. And Iโm really proud that you got that video to me after all those years. So I have to give you some love. By the way a shout out. You gotta send that back to me. I have it right on the way I know where it is. Iโm not gonna lose it. Okay, I have it. I mean, you really?
32:13
I think youโre not hereโs the thing.
32:16
I did send it you forever. They made a lot of hollow promises to send that to you. And I think now youโre kind of hold it like I think now itโs like your little payback as your your your handwriting on the side of it. And itโs your tag on it. I know where it is at all times. It has an air tag I can look at my phone and know I have an entire video of it is up on YouTube you can enjoy in full quality. Look at any of that stuff. I donโt you know like I I guess I should right as you get older. Right? You
32:50
have you never watched him? You never sat down with the family. Youโve never seen it you. Iโve never seen it. I mean, I saw that some of the clips that
33:00
you posted on YouTube, but thereโs a lot of stuff on there. I have some other ones of member rod Payne. He was on the Super Bowl team he used to live in from Michigan. Absolutely. Yeah, I think he was drafted by Cincinnati.
33:13
And he wasnโt suiting up for those games. And, you know, now everybody has a phone, right? So itโs a little bit different. But back then it was it was a little bit harder because youโd have to have a video recorder and stuff like that. And so kind of a lot of those moments that I have on those tapes are pretty good, right? Itโs not as easy as a phone anymore. So here you go to this. There it is right there. Itโs itโs all people are watching and fine. Oh, cool. This is this is uh, your work or my work. Maybe Iโm holding the camera at this point. But but the I can take it back. Thereโs 59 minutes to this dude. Like, you can go back into any point in the parade. And like real Pratt street here, you can go check it out. So
33:53
no, yeah, but I have some other stuff like, you know, some more. Itโs been tough in the locker room in terms of like, you know, just some of the guys I know for a fact like, getting down to
34:04
Oh my God. Look at that guy. Look at that guy. Right. Oh, Nestor, thank you for that I needed that you wanted to take back so this is you know, um, I want to pay back, you know, so I told my wife all the time. Like itโs okay to have a little boost to the ego every now and then. Right? Because when you get older, like, youโll see that video makes me get a little nostalgic, but thatโs great once for sure. Right? Itโs better be great once and never right. Itโs like what is it like? The Gene Hackman who whoโs just like my great lifeโs like, whatโs the big deal guy puts a ball of the Holy Ghost Hey, itโs better retreated like a guide at least once you donโt need in your life and never at all or something like that. You know, itโd be like, I enjoyed that time certainly. And like I you know, funny that you brought that up. I was gonna like, oh, yeah, I gotta get that video back for you. But you know, Iโm getting to the point now where I would probably show my kids. I think they would really
35:00
Appreciate it. And sometimes like I think Iโve just a dad. And now itโs like when you get out of the game you fear just the guy. And that will be that like, what was just like, you know, Iโm just a dad, I coach high school football, like, those days, these are behind you like when you play football, right? Thatโs who you are defined as. And it was like, great and people knew who you were there was good and bad to that. And certainly, guys like Jonathan Ray Lewis dealt with a lot of different things than I did. But now itโs kind of like, Yeah, Iโm just a guy, you have to be like, but I think sometimes when we talk about the ravens, I noticed my sons would be like, you know, I forget who was thing Joe said to be like, oh, man, it would have been cool. If I was alive with your planner. I was like, Damn, man, you know, like, itโs, I couldnโt have done it. Because I just felt like I had to be all in. Like, I couldnโt imagine like getting pulled away from football. Tom Brady. I mean, who you knew a little bit, but to be Tom Bradyโs 40 frickin five, you know, Iโm talking about when I was like 25 or 30. Put there we got yo, Jeff Mitchell. Like, there was Spencer. Thereโs a lot of guys that I played with that had those kids. And they were great. But I didnโt know if I could have done it. But then when they say stuff like that, Iโm like, Ah, man, like, how cool would have been I look back now. And I remember Did you see these, you know, Super Bowl videos or all this thing where like, you know, like, their kids are out there. And I like it. I do get a little came back and played for 10 minutes last year. And as kids got to see him win, right, like, Yeah, but I mean, so those videos, I think could be some sort of like bridge to kind of back that Iโll get back to it. And like I said, Rod paid. During that time. He said, Hey, Mike, you know what
36:30
Iโll take care of before you. So he would basically kind of be that third person, like it was the, you know, one of the one of the best films we ever got when we played out in Oakland for the AFC Championship, and I vote heโs gonna do but heโs like, you know, itโs kind of film it over. And then I say he goes, Hey, Mike, Iโll take the camera for the game. So he would get all these candid shots of being alive in some of the other plays in the locker room coaches, speeches and stuff. And like, when we came out for Oakland, and you know, the what do they call that they donโt have that I call the black hole. I donโt know if they have that in Vegas, but it was the black hole. And it was it was pretty like insane. It was insane. I get it. So it wasnโt like they were necessarily bad people but they reveled in that black hole. So they were going to be off the charts, right. But the video was at all time, are they you know, Iโm probably the wall was maybe five yards from where we were, you know, warming up. Had rods over my shoulder taking the video and Iโm not kidding you. There must have been a kid there. Probably about 10 years old. Okay. And I canโt remember it could even been a girl 30 Now, by the way, whatโs that? 30 now, or 30? Now but like, so, yelling and screaming right? And rod turned the camera and just so kid just flips the double bird. You know, itโd be like screw. I canโt remember they said fu but definitely at least a very loose screw you and like the dad is behind him again. You know, it was just but I have that video. Itโs priceless. You know what I mean? Just like
38:01
videos that have not been transferred. Yes. Okay, so hereโs what weโre gonna do. My man, Greg Landry. This is what he does. Heโs one of our students 1000 transfers. Heโs the one who literally did the film that I just showed. I mean, he listens regularly.
38:17
And so he actually came over and pick the tape up the day you sent it to me. And thatโs how I turned it around right away so I can totally I have a guy I have a guy I have a guy a guy gotta be in the radio business like youโve not have a guy
38:32
thatโs right hours like Iโm talking in the plane in Nashville, you know, like alright, letโs letโs get those to Towson transfer safely.
38:44
You know, the good thing is barring you know language, itโs all about board I know youโre trying to look for some sort of like, you know, no.
38:51
been interesting is NFL films would have wanted this stuff for the movie theyโre making the team Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cuz they reached out to me. And I said I had
39:03
I know there was some like, you know, I think I remember
39:08
you know, coming out in Oakland and like, you know, I think David had the trophy
39:16
Yeah, holding it up and stuff like that and the video of that on the bus and then I mean, at the very least, right the 10 year old given me the double birds is freaking gold. Alright, we got to do this. Donโt make it 23 more years before I get the tape. Weโll figure it out. Like it makes Yeah, Iโm gonna have you send it straight to Greg man. You know like I can middleman it or whatever but I donโt have the thing to transcribe it right? You have the recording? Oh, yeah, like 10 years ago you could find some Dylan quick this is what Greg does. So Greg Dover Towson transfers. He does this work now he hears this piece heโs gonna want to do it. So um, and the most interesting part by the way, the videos coming out right? The movie is coming out like next month, I think in conjunction with the Superbowl time that the one piece big
40:00
was the last time I saw goose alive. Was that night at the Lyric right or the Meijer off. They had an event at the Meijer off in May goose died in early June, but three weeks were goose died. And it was goose.
40:14
Dilfer. Shannon, you know, they all came in and sat on the stage and told stories Billick Marvin Jack Del Rio and Kevin Byrne MC to pick a sage to get hit with a golf ball. So the place was full of our people fans. And I mean, how Richardson was there, I ran into Femi was there, some of the local guys came by. And
40:37
the upshot was as fans in the in the seating bowl, they would go to a video from NFL films from that period of time that I think they were looking for reaction from the players, right? Yeah, the whole thing was made for television. Right, right. Like the the live event will be a big part of the conversation, Iโm sure in the end of what the documentary will be about the greatest defense ever. But thereโs a piece in the Nashville game afterward, where Bill is pissed after the win. Iโm assuming itโs the playoff win. And heโs like, turn all the effing cameras off. down, turn it off. And obviously, the one camera stayed on, and I had never seen this. And heโs like, after Tennessee Titans and the feared or went wild, you know, like so Iโm sure thatโs it. Do you have that on? I could? I donโt know. Iโve never looked at it. Well, thatโs why Iโm asking you about it. Because to me, that would be something really, really special if you happen to have that.
41:39
Now, because rod would be doing it. So Iโm you know, he would rod take direction from from Brian or would he just listen, he would do it in a bad way he would if he wanted to Phil, you would have filled. All right, good, good. Good. All right. Thatโs what it was good. It was good stuff. And yeah, you get this algae about that. And I look forward to that. I mean, it was pretty unique team too. I mean, listen, every Super Bowl team, right? They have their story and this snap, but I just kind of think off the top of my head and think of like, okay,
42:06
what were some of the most unique teams in terms of like maybe characters and storylines? And like, itโs like 85 Bears was an awesome team, right? Like, the 70. Was it the 74? Or is the 76 Raiders, that one, they finally kind of broke through with Kenny Stabler, you know what I mean? Like, you know, like, theyโre just like, the chiefs are great. And the Patriots has some great teams and like,
42:31
you know, but when you think of characters and unique teams, and I think from a storytelling standpoint, yes, from a storytelling, I think Baltimore would be pretty unique in that sense, because it was very,
42:46
I guess, it wasnโt like, a streamlined team. I donโt know how to articulate you donโt I mean, it wasnโt like,
42:54
it was a very rough around the edges team does not make a lot like it was just not perfect by any stretch by by the visual of it. You know, you see some of our guys, you know, and then of the quarterback situation. And then, you know, Brian, and then like, some of the other guys that it was just a very unorthodox team is that you know what I mean? Like, I thought it was pretty unique in that fact. So, you know, Iโm proud to be a part of something like that, you know, kids are gonna love that video, right? I mean, thatโs probably the night you sit the kids on the couch and say, Hey, this thingโs coming on, right? Oh, yeah. Well watch that. Yeah. As a family. Oh, yeah.
43:38
You know, I think the kids will I canโt imagine they wouldnโt like that sort of stuff. And itโs funny how weโve morphed into ravens household
43:50
you know, I thatโs just what we are. Now. Weโre actually coming down. Iโm gonna go to classes. Weโll be down there for the Steelers game. Iโll see you then. I look forward to because we have been we didnโt go last year because, you know, weโre supposed to go one time we got COVID which was crazy. We all said I feel what game weโre gonna go to. And one time we had you want to talk about my son literally cried. Jake was in Seattle. For that show. Doubtfire was before the Broadway and I let him know that we were gonna go to the AFC Championship game.
44:23
But they lost the Titans. And weโre watching the game of the plane. Weโre literally flying home. And we got to the boss, we came up and he he was like, teary eyed. And heโs like, I donโt understand that. How could they lose? I go they were you know, I think what year were they were 14 to two. I think that was 19. Yeah, I just said how can they lose? You know he could understand and that was Marshalls last game your body? Yeah, yeah. And I said, Son I go youโre gonna understand like,
44:51
if you cheer for a sports team, more often than not, they disappoint you in ways like they lose. It happens like not everybody could win but like it was
45:00
weird because I didnโt know he was at invested anything like that. And I donโt know whether he was he was we wanted to go you but he just it was funny and I think of like as a kid I think of like Ravens fans and even fans were like, he was just so like, how could they lose that? So you mentioned that Raiders team breaking through. And I remember that because goes to the post I was at that game.
45:20
I remember waiting for the bus after the game and they had lost to the Raiders after losing to the Steelers the year before and before that, so like I had and then then they took my team. Then they took my team Flynn on Mayflower. All right, well, listen, letโs get together. start the year off. Right. Youโre coming in for New Yearโs Eve New Yearโs Day for the Steelers game. Good. Good. Good. Yes. Weโll make sure you get the big craps. It costs okay. Oh, good. I will play it. I will play it. Iโll let you know that I definitely want to bring the boys because they I mean, I cannot knock it down. Theyโre not gonna theyโre gonna fight. Well make sure you get the tapes out too, because we got it. We got to get those tapes over. Thatโd be a lot of fun. 21 years later, I think statute limitations is all over with least I felt that way put the video up. So
46:05
watch him first.
46:07
Before before I unleash it on the world. Iโm just getting unleashed or an MP ever played on running for Senate or president or something like that. I donโt want another Mike Flynn. Itโs already crushed you if you can never run for anything honorable. Thatโs right. Because when I started running there Googler that gets you know, youโre like
46:27
a trader. I was a senator, not a trader. Mike, I appreciate you. As always many years and crabcakes waiting for Mike Flynn find him out on the interwebs he also does some sports radio in Boston when heโs not running around chasing his kids and telling great old stories. I am Mr. We are wn st Towson Baltimore. Hey, Iโm 1570 We never stop talking Baltimore positive
