Nearly every Baltimorean has a unique story or knows someone with an experience involving the Hall of Fame defensive tackle who became known more for his personality than his terrific play for the Colts in the 1950s and early 1960s. Whether it was his famous television appearances with David Letterman or simply holding court with his guests at Valley Country Club, Donovan was larger than life and unafraid to laugh at anyone — including himself.

A civic treasure lost just last year, Donovan was a goofball in the most positive form of the word and tops the list of unforgettable Baltimore sports personalities.
