15. Bubba Smith

You won’t find many stories about the two-time Pro Bowl defensive end being a goofball — his dominating play did the talking — during his days with the Colts, but it was his post-playing career that landed him on our list of local sports goofballs.

Smith became an actor and appeared in a number of television shows and movies, but he became somewhat of a cult hero playing the soft-spoken officer Moses Hightower in the Police Academy movie series in the 1980s. The College Football Hall of Fame inductee was also a regular on a series of popular beer commercials featuring retired players.

Remembered as a great teammate and a gentle giant when he passed away in 2011, Smith’s acting roles allowed Baltimoreans to see him in a different light.
